Professor Hughes joined the Calvin faculty in 2007. A graduate of Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts, he returned to his roots in the desert southwest, earning his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Arizona in 2006.

Prof. Hughes' research is in culture, organizations, education, and historical change. He is particularly interested in how colleges and universities in North America affect and are affected by broader changes in culture. Martin's dissertation analyzed the history of the University of Phoenix as a case of organizational legitimation; he has presented related papers at Scandinavian Consortium of Organizational Research (SCANCOR), the American Sociological Association (ASA), and the Academy of Management (AOM).

Currently Prof. Hughes is developing a review essay of several books that explore the changing relationships between universities and business; the essay will be published in a future issue of Contemporary Sociology, the official ASA journal for book reviews.
