Honduras’
Best Development Organizations
(in
our humble opinion)
Genesis and Ministerios Cristianos de Mayordomía (MCM)
http://www.mcmhn.org/ingles/home_english.htm
Stewardship of Christian Ministries (SCM) is the
social arm of the Brethren Church in Honduras. For more than 25 years,
SCM has been developing ministries motivated by their Christian faith and
desire to serve all people in Honduras, regardless of income level or where
they live. Genesis—the largest project of SCM—is a holistic community
development organization which works in Nueva Suyapa. Genesis is
dedicated to the development of the community by providing services in the
areas of education, health care, economic development, and youth
development. They are unusual in that all their staff live in the community in
which they work.
Alfasic
does literacy work and adult education (grades 1-high school for adults) all
over Honduras, including having over 300 students in Honduran jails. Very cool work.
ASJ—Association
for a More Just Society http://ajs-us.org/
ASJ’s goal is to help transform Honduras, and the world, into a
more just society. To this end, AJS supports efforts in Honduras that promote
the interests of the most poor in legislative projects, defend the rights of
the most vulnerable in judicial processes, increase the awareness and democratic
participation of churches to practice the Biblical teachings on justice, and
publish journalistic investigations on issues that affect the poor of Honduras.
AJS works specifically in 5 areas—land rights for residents of marginal
communities, legal and counseling services for very poor neighborhoods, labor
rights for the poorest workers, investigations into government corruption and justice
and counseling for victims of gang violence.
