Thorne, Carol.  Naturalistic Insight from Christian Volunteers: Reflection, Commitment, and Personal Development.  (dissertationNorthern Illinois University, 1998.

Summary: Author interviewed, sent questionnaires to Christian adults who taught English overseas for short terms.  Author finds these volunteers had many attractive characteristics-nonmaterialistic lifestyle, friendships with internationals, helpfulness and sense of responsibility, optimism and sense of gratitude, flexibility, ability to change and grow, sense that they were not sacrificing finances, time, or energy in volunteering-and concludes that organizations seeking volunteers should look for people with these characteristics.  Author stresses that the character or personality of an individual can play a strong role in motivating him or her to service-some personality types may be more suited, attracted to mission work than others.
