Students - Scholarships in Sociology

In addition to need-based scholarships and other general scholarships for which all students are eligible, the Department of Sociology and Social Work provides scholarships specifically for majors within the department.

  • Barbara Gezon Baker Scholarship for Academic Excellence
    This scholarship is awarded to departmental students entering the junior or senior year who have an outstanding academic record, particularly within the department. The quality of the student's written work may be considered as well. Candidates are nominated by department members; no application is required.

  • Dr. Donald Bouma Memorial Scholarship in Sociology and Social Work
    Two scholarships are given annually to a sociology or social work major entering the junior or senior year, in memory of Dr. Bouma, Calvin's first professor of sociology. The scholarship requires an application.

  • Daniel C. Duyst Memorial Scholarship
    Applicants must be entering the junior or senior year and be pursuing a Sociology major with a GPA of 2.70 or higher and an interest in criminal justice. Special consideration may be given to those who aspire to a career in law enforcement, while those interested in a broad range of service opportunities in court, correction, and treatment-related roles are eligible to apply.

  • Sociology and Social Work Faculty Honors Scholarship. One scholarship is awarded annually to a sociology or social work major entering the senior year. An application is required.
  • Leanne Joy Knot Memorial Scholarship
    Recipients must be social work or sociology majors entering their junior or senior years with a cumulative grade point of 3.0 or higher. In addition, recipients must demonstrate a sincere desire to (1) help children, (2) promote improved health care, education and standards of living among the poor, or (3) volunteer in the Peace Corps. Financial need will also be considered.
  • Richard and Janice Van Deelen Scholarship
    This scholarship is for students entering the junior or senior year and who have a cumulative grade point of 3.0 or higher. Candidates must be adopted, or have a special interest in adoption, or interested in working with children, and be committed to the pro-life position on the issue of abortion.
  • Vanderploeg-Edgerly Scholarship
    This scholarship recognizes a promising student majoring in sociology, social work, or criminal justice. Applicants must be entering the junior or senior year and have a cumulative grade point of 3.0 or higher. In accepting the award, the recipient will agree to write a major paper on the topic of child sexual abuse.
