| For
the Calvin B.S.W. student, practicum is the culmination of three years
of hard work. Students have the opportunity for critical personal growth
and professional development in an agency setting under the practicum
instructor's supervision and on-campus in weekly small group seminars.
Practicum is a time for practicing what has been learned in the classroom
and getting feedback on implementation followed by evaluation and more
testing. It is a time for integration of one's world-and-life view with
the ideals and realities of educational theories and the needs of clients
with whom students work. Practicum, more than anything, is a critical
mentorship as the developing social worker begins shaping his/her professional
identity.
Practicums are pursued at agencies where students will have the opportunity to practice generalist social work skills. A variety of social work settings are sought such that each student's interests and skills can be matched with agency needs. Agencies that are selected have several characteristics in common. They should have volume and flow in programming such that students are offered a wide range of learning experiences with multi-level client systems. Their programs and intervention methods should be clearly defined and implemented. The student should have opportunities for practicing generalist social work skills such as interviewing, contracting, invervention, networking, advocacy, group work and organization of community resources. The agency should provide services to diverse population groups, including ethnic, racial, religious, and gender-based minorities. Finally, the agency's philosophy and delivery of service should comply with the NASW Code of Ethics This page contains a partial list of practicum sites. Not every site is used every year, and BSW students can be placed at sites that are not included in this list. If you have any questions, Professor Lissa Schwander is the Practicum Coordinator.
