Dr. Beryl Hugen (Ph,D., University of Kansas; M.S.W., Western Michigan University) is a Professor of Social Work and the Social Work Program Director at Calvin College. He has been a member of Calvin's faculty since 1997 and has experience teaching Vulnerable Populations, Social Work Practicum, and Policy, Programs and Practice. Previously, he was a Professor of Social Work and Sociology and the Director of the Social Work Program at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa. He has had several years of practice experience as a Psychiatric Social Worker.

Prof. Hugen's research interests lie in examining the role of faith-based organizations as providers of social services. He is also interested in exploring the integration of Christian faith and Social Work practice.

Hugen's published work has discussed the integration of faith and practice, Social Work history, and mental health. His work has appeared in Social Work and Christianity, Pro Rege, and Research on Social Work Practice. He has also presented on leadership of faith-motivated volunteers and community-based treatment models for persons with severe and persistent mental illness. Prof. Hugen has edited a number of books, including Spiritual and Religious Traditions in Social Work Practice, Christianity and Social Work, and Readings on the Integration of Christian Faith and Social Work Practice. In addition to his writing and teaching, he taught Social Work values and ethics at the Russian American Christian University in Moscow, Russia.
