Science in Elementary School

Elementary school teachers in Michigan are certified to teach all disciplines, but they are normally required to major in a specific discipline, or to obtain a general major and a minor in a specific discipline. Students at Calvin College often choose to major or minor in integrated science.

Elementary Group Major

The major consists of at least 36 semester hours of science content courses and 2 or 3 hours of science methods (SCES 312 OR 313) for a total of at least 38 semester hours as described below:

  1. SCES 121-Content and Nature of Science for Elementary Teachers (4 credits)
  2. SCES 122-Science Content and Skills for Elementary Teachers (4 credits)
  3. ASTR 110-Planets, Stars and Galaxies OR ASTR 211-Planetary and Stellar Astronomy (4 credits)
  4. ** CHEM 101-The Molecular World (4 credits)
  5. GEOL 120-Earth Systems or ++GEOL 112-Earth Science for Educators (4 credits)
  6. BIOL 115- Human Biology (4 credits)
  7. * PHYS 212-Inquiry-Based Physics (4 credits)
  8. ++SCES 312 or 313-Teaching Science in Elementary and Middle School (2-3 credits)
  9. At least one advisor-approved elective in life science (4 credits)
  10. At least one advisor-approved elective in science (4 credits)

TOTAL = 38 or 39 s. hrs.

Elementary Group Minor:

The minor consists of at least 24 semester hours of science content courses and 2 hours of science methods (SCES 313) for a total of at least 26 semester hours as described below:

  1. SCES 121-Content and Nature of Science for Elementary Teachers (4 credits)
  2. SCES 122-Science Content and Skills for Elementary Teachers (4 credits)
  3. GEOL 120-Earth Systems or ++GEOL 112-Earth Science for Educators (4 credits)
