Services for Current Students - Coaching Program

Image of SASThe Coaching Program was started in the Spring Semester of 1998 as a result of an endowment given to Calvin College by William and Elaine Stoub. This endowed position is called the "Counselor for Students with Disabilities" and it focuses on students with attention deficit disorders and learning disabilities.

Requesting a coach:

First, discuss your need for learning assistance with the Coaching Coordinator. The Coordinator will give you a form. After the form is completed and returned SAS, your assignment to a coach will usually be made within 24 hours. It will be your responsibility to check in to find out when your first meeting will take place. Please note that coaching is offered until approximately one month before the end of the semester. Click here if you would like the two forms from the web page.

Cost:

Coaching is available free of charge to any student who the Coordinator agrees that coaching would be beneficial.

FAQ:

Does coaching go on all semester?

It is assumed that the coach and student will continue to meet once a week unless they decide that coaching is no longer appropriate. The coach or the student may request that coaching be discontinued.

What if I'm not sure that coaching is what I need?

You may make an appointment with a member of the SAS staff to discuss your academic situation. These advisors will help you determine the steps to take in order to develop your approaches to studying and managing time.

What other forms of assistance are available?

When coaching or other forms of study assistance are not effective, the student may seek professional guidance in diagnosing obstacles to academic success and in designing plans for corrective action. Diagnosing may involve self–reports, skills tests, and/or individual ability tests. Intervening may involve repeated counseling sessions, "homework prescriptions," and/or referral to the Broene Counseling Center for counseling and Career Services for career development.
