Research: What is it?

In this section you will be introduced to many ideas, concepts, and tools associated with the research process. The goals of this section are

  • to introduce you to the complex nature of research
  • to give you an overview of where research takes place
  • to examine the myths and realities of the Web
  • to introduce you to effective database searching
  • to learn the art of evaluating sources.

Research is part of a complex process that eventually arrives at a deeper understanding of a subject. This complex process involves critical-thinking skills, writing skills, detective work, attention to minutiae, and perseverance. After reading this chapter, attending class, and participating in research workshops, you will have the fundamental knowledge required to become an effective researcher.
