Fundamentals of Microsoft Word

Some of the skills presented in this section of the tutorial require access to Microsoft's online assistance and training materials. To access these resources you need to:

  • Have Office 2003 installed on the computer you are using. All Calvin student computers, except InfoXpress stations, have Office 2003 installed
  • Use Internet Explorer as your browser.

Save, Enter, Format, and Print Text, etc.

You will be responsible to know the following items included in the checklist. Use the Help Menu or Microsoft's online assistance (http://office.microsoft.com/assistance) to review or learn the following skills:

  • Enter and edit data
  • Use Save As… (File > Save As)
    • Different versions of word
    • .rtf (Rich Text Format)
  • Apply formatting including:
    • Change font, font size, font style (Format > Font OR Formatting Toolbar)
    • Apply bold, italic, or underline (Format > Font OR Formatting Toolbar)
    • Cut, copy and paste (Edit > or Ctrl+ X, Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V)
  • Use the Spelling and Grammar check (Tools > Spelling and Grammar)
  • Print Dialog Box and Printing Options (Ctrl + P)
  • Find hidden toolbars, including the: (View > Toolbars)
    • standard toolbar
    • formatting toolbar
    • menu bar
    • knowing the difference between docked and floating toolbars
      Know how to:
  • Use the Undo Function (Ctrl + Z ) [Also works with other windows programs!]
  • Be familiar with Paragraph Formatting including knowing how to: (Format > Paragraph)
    • Align paragraphs
    • Indent paragraphs
    • Add line and page breaks
    • Change the spacing before and after
  • Set Tabs (Format > Tabs)
    • With the menu (Format > Tabs) and tabs dialog box
    • Using the ruler
    • Move a tab stop
    • Delete a tab stop with the ruler
    • Move, add, change various tabs (decimal, left, right, center, etc..)

Microsoft provides a number of tutorials online at http://office.microsoft.com/training/. We will be using these tutorials to guide you through the skills you need to learn. To access the tutorials, Microsoft Office 2003 must be installed on your computer. All student computers on campus (with the exception of infoXpress stations) have access to Microsoft Office 2003, and therefore these tutorials.

Go to http://office.microsoft.com/training/ and select the Word link under Browse Training Courses. See diagram below.

You will need to complete the following tutorials. Many include audio narration which require you to unmute the volume from computer lab stations as well as have headphones. All include practice exercises and self-testing opportunities.
