Microsoft Powerpoint FAQ

The following are common questions and problems people have when working through the RIT Powerpoint Tutorial:

  1. What if I can't see the Microsoft Powerpoint training materials at the Microsoft website office.microsoft.com/assistance or office.microsoft.com/tutorial?
  2. I can't hear the audio narration on the Microsoft website training materials.
  3. I can't select more than one object in order to group them.
  4. What if I just can't get it?

What if I can't see the Microsoft Powerpoint Tutorials at the Microsoft website office.microsoft.com/assistance or office.microsoft.com/tutorial? There's no link to Powerpoint.

If you can't see the Powerpoint tutorials you need to make sure that:

  • You are working on a computer that has Office 2003 installed. Microsoft does not provide online access to the tutorials if your computer does not have Office 2003 installed. The majority of student computers on-campus (with the exception of infoXpress stations) have access to Microsoft Powerpoint.
  • You are browsing using Internet Explorer. Microsoft requires that you use their browser to access their tutorials. Netscape, Mozilla, or other Web browsers may have problems.

I can't hear the Microsoft Tutorials Audio.

  • Check out headphones from the front desk of the ITC. If you are working in another lab you may need to bring your own.
  • Adjust the volume properties. By default, many of Calvin's computer labs have the volume set to mute. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Volume Control and uncheck Mute All or double-click on the volume icon in the system tray in the lower right-hand corner of Windows.

I can't select more than one object in order to group them.

In order to select multiple objects in Windows programs, hold down the Shift key while left clicking on the desired items.

What if I just can't get it?

If there is an aspect of Powerpoint that you do not understand:

  • Take a break and/or try to go through the instructions carefully step by step again. Sometimes when learning a new skill it is easy to skip a step.
  • Ask a classmate, friend, or peer for assistance. This may include working through the tutorial at the same time as someone else taking the class. If you get stuck, have someone demonstrate how to do it, then do it a few times yourself.
  • Look up your problem in the Help Menu. Take advantage of the help resources offered in Powerpoint and on their website.
  • Ask an ITC staff member for assistance. While the ITC staff are not able to do your homework, they can demonstrate if you get stuck on a particular skill. Their job is not to teach you the entire tutorial. One objective of RIT is to teach you how to learn independently.
  • Ask your professor. Your professor will be able to answer questions for you if you get stuck. Be prepared to demonstrate/tell your professor what you have tried so far.
