Windows XP Checklist

The following checklist includes all the Windows XP skills you need to understand and be able to perform for IDIS 110 (RIT). Print a copy of it out to use as a guide and self-study sheet.

  • Starting out
    • Boot a computer
    • Shut down a computer
    • Run a program
  • Help menu and tutorials
    • Locate the Help menu
    • Navigate the Help menu
  • Know the basic terms of Windows, including:
    • Desktop
    • Icons
    • File name
    • Task Bar
    • Start menu
    • Quick Launch bar
    • System Tray
  • Navigation basics: know how to
    • Navigate the start menu
    • Distinguish between logoff and shutdown
    • Use the Help menu
    • Right-click
  • Graphical User Interface including knowing how to:
    • multitask, resize and move windows
    • identify windows icons
    • use menus and keyboard shortcuts (e.g. Ctrl+S, Windows + M, Ctrl + P, Ctrl + X, Ctrl + V, etc.)
    • Use the print screen function
    • define and identify a dialog box
  • File Management
    • Access and navigate Windows Explorer
    • Identify drive letters
    • Move files
    • Create folders
    • Rename and delete files and folders
  • Troubleshooting including knowing how to:
    • Use the task manager (Ctrl + Alt + Delete)
    • Reboot after a crash
    • Use the general troubleshooting technique
