Religion - Honors Program

Students may elect to take any Religion course for honors credit. (The department does not offer specific sections of courses for honors credit.) The following requirements have been approved for department courses:

121 Biblical Literature and Theology

  1. A ten page research/thesis paper of suitable quality in place of a regular major writing assignment.
  2. A book review, including summary and evaluation, of 3-4 pages in length or a short book or a portion thereof (about 200 pages) in the field of biblical studies.
  3. Several meetings with the professor during the semester to discuss the paper and book review.
  4. A minimum grade of B+ in the class as a whole.

131 Christian Theology

  1. A ten page research/thesis paper of suitable quality in place of a regular major writing assignment.
  2. A book review of 3-4 pages on readings in classical theological texts.
  3. Several meetings with the professor during the semester to discuss the paper and book review.
  4. A minimum grade of B+ in the class as a whole.

All elective courses:

  1. A twelve to fifteen page research/thesis paper of suitable quality in place of the regular course paper assignment.
  2. Appropriate additional readings in the subject matter of the course (primary source readings are encouraged). The manner by which this reading is evaluated is left to the discretion of the professor (review or conference).
  3. Meet several times during the semester with the professor to discuss the paper and additional reading.
  4. A minimum grade of B+ in the class as a whole.

The specific honors requirements for each student will be stated in a written contract between the student and professor, and all courses will advertise this honors track on the syllabus. Two types of contracts are available online:
