PSYCHOLOGY MAJOR

Students intending to major in the department must complete 151 with a minimum grade of C (2.0). Students who entered Calvin in the Fall of 2002 or later will be required to complete a ten-course major consisting of the following:

  1. 151 (Introductory) [Note: Must complete with a C grade or better.]
  2. 255 (Statistics and Research Design)
  3. 256 (Fundamentals of Research and Practice)
  4. 399 (Psychology and Religion)
  5. Three 300-level course electives, one of which must be 330-334 (lab course)
  6. Three additional courses from the department (may include one interim)

Notes:

  1. Not more than one interim can count toward the major.
  2. Neither Psychology 390 (Independent Study) nor an interim can be counted as 300-level elective.
  3. Although we make every effort to keep this website current and equivalent to the catalog, the printed Calvin College Catalog remains the official document of requirements.
  4. Due to overlapping content in some of the developmental courses, students may apply toward their major:
  5. a) only one couse from courses numbered 201-205

    b) Psyc 207 OR Psyc 322 but not both, unless Psyc 322 was taken before year 2006.

  6. Student should ordinarily take Psych 255 during their sophomore year and Psych 256 in the semester following completion of Psych 255.

GENERAL PSYCHOLOGY MINOR

  1. 151
  2. At least one course from 255, or 330-334
  3. Four Psychology electives, one of which may be an interim
  4. Must complete a minimum of 6 psychology courses and a minimum of 18 semester hours of psychology course credit.
  5. Students may include only one course from Psychology 201-205 as part of their minor.
  6. Students may include Psyc 207 OR Psyc 322 but not both, unless Psyc 322 was taken before year 2006.

SECONDARY EDUCATION PSYCHOLOGY MINOR

  • Psychology 151
  • Psychology 201

  • Psychology 399
  • At least one from Psychology 255, 330, 331, 332, 333, or 334
  • One psychology elective (may include an interim, but Psyc 204 or Psyc 205 may not count toward this elective).

Students must complete a minimum of 7 psychology courses and a minimum of 20 semester hours of psychology course credit.

Students are encouraged to take Psychology 255 to fulfill the core requirement in mathematics if their program allows.


 

Department Requirements for Graduation with Honors

  • Students wishing to graduate with honors in Psychology must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.3 (3.5 beginning with the Class of 2007) and must complete at least six honors courses (18 semester hours minimum). Three of these courses must be in pyschology and three must be from outside of the major. One of the psychology honors courses must involve an honors research paper in Psychology 356 or a comparable honors project in Psychology 390. Students must also achieve a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 (3.5 beginning with the Class of 2007) in their psychology major.
