Dr. Stehouwer is a Clinical Psychologist licensed by the State of Michigan. He is also a Fellow and Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Psychotherapists; a Fellow and Diplomate of the International Academy of Behavioral Medicine, Counseling and Psychotherapy; and a Senior Disability Analyst and Diplomate of the American Board of Disability Analysts. He has taught in the Calvin Psychology Department for more than 30 years, and previously taught at Wayne State University.
Dr. Stehouwer’s research and writing have been in the areas of assessment and treatment of depression, developmental differences in depression, and child psychopathology and psychotherapy. Presently he is involved in editing and writing a series of children’s books on helping deal with emotional issues children face. He is also involved in research and writing on the importance of failure experiences in the healthy development of children.
Dr. Stehouwer is married to Nancy DeVos Stehouwer who teaches science and Bible at Grand Rapids Christian Middle School. He has four grown children and (so far) two fantastic grand-children.
