The following postings were provided to the Calvin Pre-law Program by the sponsoring firm or organization. The openings may have been filled since posting, but Calvin pre-law students are encouraged to contact the company to determine current availability.
Law Internship reserved for Calvin College pre-law student
Smith Haughey Rice and Roegge, a large firm in downtown Grand Rapids, offers one annual law internship specifically to a pre-law student from Calvin College. All sophomore through senior-level pre-law candidates are welcome; diverse candidates are especially encouraged to apply. The firm has been in existence since 1941, and delivers outstanding expertise, exceptional efficiency and specailized practice areas in a full range of legal matters. The internship is unpaid and requires 10 to 15 hours per week between February 4 through April 26, 2013. It is expected that the student will be participating in the internship for academic credit. The internship will involve courtroom observation, research, writing, and clerical work. It is expected that the student will complete some type of semester project and will write an article to be published in the firm's client newsletter regarding recent Court of Appeals and Supreme Court decisions in an area of law of particular interest to the student. This opportunity will provide an introduction to law firm operations and exposure to a number of practice areas in the field of law. Interns are expected to be punctual and professional, motivated, willing to ask questions, and looking for a challenge.

Diversity and Inclusion Internship with Varnum Law
Varnum Riddering Schmidt Howlett, LLP is offering internships in their Grand Rapids and Detroit offices starting in January 2013 and in September 2013. The positions are intended to launch and encourage the recipients' future legal careers, including providing exposure to social and cultural integration into the legal field. Applicants must be in their sophomore or junior year of college, with a minimum 3.0 GPA, and have demonstrated a significant commitment to issues of ethnic or racial diversity and inclusion -- or be members of an ethnic or racial minority. The internship is a paid position, designed to meet the hourly internship requirements of Calvin (if applicable), and requires a minimum commitment of 10 hours per week. Applications are due November 2, 2012 for the winter 2013 position and February 22, 2013 for the fall 2013 opening.

Pre-Law College Student Intern with Michigan Law Firm
Michigan law firm Varnum LLP, located in Grand Rapids and metropolitan Detroit, is seeking two individuals for paid internship positions from September through December and from January through April. Applicants must be fulfilling their junior or senior college year, with a minimum 3.0 GPA; interns will be expected to work 10 to 15 hours per week, but the schedule is flexible based on the inidividual's class requirements. Internships in Washington D.C.
Pre-Law students who are interested in securing an internship and exploring the field of law should consider the Semester in Washington D.C. Program. Each spring, Calvin students spend time in the nation's capital, working four days each week in internships that have been selected to meet their interests and career goals. On the fifth day, they visit fascinating places and meet people who are putting their religious faith to work in public policy arenas around the world. Calvin students have worked in a wide variety of organizations and fields, including law firms as well as in numerous positions that interact with the legal field.

Internships at Bankruptcy Firm
Jeffrey D. Mapes PLC in Grand Rapids is seeking 2 - 3 highly motivated interns who can work with minimal supervision in their high volume bankruptcy firm in Grand Rapids. Tasks will involve auditing pre-petition bankruptcy case files, drafting and filing documents with the Bankruptcy Court, drafting and submitting payroll orders to employers and the Bankruptcy Court, uploading debtor documentation to the Bankruptcy Court, and processing pre-filing documentation. Summer Internships at Priority Health
Fifteen summer internships for college students are being offered by Priority Health. The students will be hosted by various departments within the health care company, including the Compliance and Legal department. The internships include a focused project for the entirety of the internship; a structured orientation; a formal mentor-protege relationship; group volunteer activities; special social/networking events; and HR workshops including resume building and interview skills. At the close of the internship, students will be required to present a final project demonstrating what they have learned. The program begins May 7 and concludes August 10. Legal Services Intern with Voices for Hope
Voices for Hope is a nonprofit organization providing legal services to clients in areas that include family law, real estate, immigration, and criminal law, regardless of client income. They are seeking an intern with interest in the legal profession and empathy for people from all backgrounds, with an ability to interact well with others. Spanish speaking skills are not required but would be helpful. The student will be involved in immigration issues, criminal research, general office work, observing legal work in court and client meeting settings, and will participate in legal clinics offered at Guiding Light Mission periodically. Intern with Berghuis Psychological Services PC
Berghuis Psychological Services P.C. primarily treats sex offenders (both men and women). The intern would participate in treatment groups with a clinician, gradually taking on responsibilities and eventually leading some groups. The individual would also learn about paperwork requirements and other duties and present didactic information to groups. Spanish Language Intern with Tanis and Herman
Tanis and Herman law firm (located in downtown Grand Rapids) has an opening for a bilingual individual (Spanish and English) Intern who will handle initial interviews with potential clients. The first interview would be by telephone, and the intern would subsequently assist as a translator in meetings between the client and attorney. Additionally, the intern may be charged with translating documents and attending court hearings. Office space will be provided, and depending upon the skills of the individual filling the position, compensation may be included.
