Events: Past Calvin Pre-Law Program Events

2013-2014 Academic Year

The annual Pre-Law Program orientation meetings for Calvin students were held in September. Additional informational meetings and events included:

A series of three luncheon programs were sponsored by Calvin through the year, featuring invited guests to discuss topics with students on "The Role of Lawyers in Non-Profit Entities," "The Role of Lawyers in Death Penalty Litigation," and "The Write Stuff: The Role of Law Clerks in the Federal Judiciary."

Webinars and online chats sponsored by Michigan State University were made available to Calvin students on the topics of "Admissions Standards and Scholarship," topics related to personal statements, "Cracking the LSAT", "Reinventing Law: How Legal Employment is Being Transformed," "Legal Career Options and Market Outlook," "The Legal Market for Recent Law School Graduates," and "Tips for Strengthening Your Law School Application."

PatBar webinars about "The Life and Times of an Associate Attorney," and sessions about patents and patent law.

Kaplan Test Prep broadcasting of an online mock law school admissions event.

Representatives from numerous law schools visited Calvin to present information to interested students:

Lectures and educational seminars included:

Guest lecturers included Jason Glaser from La Isla Foundation speaking on "An Emerging Epidemic: Where Public Health and Law Intersect," various attorneys and legal support professionals from the Grand Rapids area hosted "In-house Legal Practice: All the Same or Widely Diverse" at Calvin, and Regent University School of Law professor James Davids spoke on " Presidential Abuse of the Constitution: Is the Present Administration the Worst?" In November, Deans of Admission from University of Cincinnati College of Law and Michigan State University College of Law offered inwight and recommendation about applying for law school, Jim Gash from Pepperdine University taught a Mock Law School Class and spoke on "Being a Christian Attorney" and Stephen van Stempvoort gave a lecture on "Privacy in the Information Age: Do Fourth Amendment Rights to Privacy Still Mean Anything?"

We publicized and participated in Law Forums by:

Michigan State University's Law Fair and law school preparation workshops in East Lansing, Michigan and Law school information receptions around the state; University of Michigan's Law Day in Ann Arbor, Michigan; the University of Wisconsin Law Fair; the the Tri-State Academy of Legal Studies in Business in Ashland, OH, and the Chicago Law School Forum sponosred by the LSAC.

A series of four luncheon programs were sponsored by Calvin through the year, featuring invited guests to discuss topics with students on "Being a Christian Lawyer," "Preparing for and Succeeding in Law School," "Finding a Job After Law School," and "Deciding if a Legal Career is Right for You."

Webinars and online chats sponsored by Michigan State University were made available to Calvin students on the topics of "Crafting Your Best Personal Statement," programs available at MSU, "Admission Standards and Scholarship Opportunities," "Cracking the LSAT," "Creating a Road Map for Freshmen and Sophomores Considering Law School," and "Career Options and Market Outlook for Attorneys."

Five livestreamed seminars from the University of Akron School of Law discussed the different sources of law and the various legal arguments that spring from those sources.

Guest lecturers included Daniel Bennett from Southern Illinois University speaking on "As Iron Sharpens Iron: Causes, Strategies and Variations Among Christian Conservative Legal Organizations," and Perrin Rynders from Varnum Law firm on "A Liberal Arts Grad in the For-Profit Sector."

Varnum Law sponsored "So...You Think You Want to be a Lawyer" on July 26, 2012.

Michigan State University sponsored "Get Ready For the Law" on September 21, and an overview of MSU Law School on October 10 and October 31, 2012.

We publicized and participated in Law Forums by:

Michigan State Unviersity's Law Fair on September 19, 2012 in East Lansing, Michigan

University of Michigan's Law Day in Ann Arbor, Michigan on September 20, 2012.

The Midwest Alliance for Law School Admissions Recruiting Forum in Chicago on October 4, 2012.

Michigan State University's Information Receptions in Grand Rapids on October 18, in East Lansing on November 14, and in Detroit on November 15, 2012.

The Midwest Alliance for Law School Admissions' online chat including admissions representatives from 8 midwest law schools.

Valpraiso University School of Law representatives presented information to interested students on October 12, 2011

A representative from University of Detroit Mercy Law School met with Calvin students on October 12, 2011

University of Toledo Law School advisers were on Calvin's campus to meet with students on October 12, 2011

Mark Totten, of Michigan State University College of Law met with Calvin students to discuss legal vocations and education on March 29, 2012

Ohio Northern University admissions representative Linda English met with Calvin students interested in ONU's law school on October 12, 2010

Kaplan Practice Test sponsored a free practice LSAT at Calvin on April 16, 2011

Global Justice, Human Rights and the Rule of Law by Jeffrey Brauch, Regent University School of Law at Calvin on October 19, 2010

Calvin's CAS Department and U.S. District Court Judge Gordon Quist collaborated to produce a video for prospective jurors, with Calvin Pre-law students invited to participate in the production

A panel of Calvin alumni currently working in the legal field featured Chris Meyer from Warner Norcross and Judd, Todd Kingma from Perrigo, and Pamela Emenheiser from Varnum Law. The attorneys met with Calvin students on March 30, 2011

Lobbyists from Spectrum Health, Spartan Foods, Amway, Adams Outdoor Advertising, and McAlvey & Associates formed a panel of government relations professionals to share information about lobbying with Calvin students on April 20, 2011

A lecture entitled Perspectives on the Slums of Nairobi, Kenya given at Calvin on October 20, 2009, by Christine Bodewes, human rights lawyer and Maryknoll lay missioner who has worked in Nairobi, Kenya for many years. Pre-law students were invited to have lunch with Bodewes and discuss issues surrounding the field of law in a non-profit setting and in general terms
