Peter V. Tigchelaar Pre-Medical/Dental Scholarship
This scholarship was established by grateful students to honor Peter V. Tigchelaar's 33 years as Calvin College's pre-medical and pre-dental advisor. Professor Tigchelaar has modeled academic excellence and Christian character as hallmarks to success in medicine and dentistry. He has invested personally in the lives of students interested in the health professions. As his family, colleagues, and students note: "He mentors, befriends, helps, and encourages students. Along with his family, they are his whole heart." Candidates are Calvin students entering their junior or senior year who have attended Calvin for at least one year and who are pursuing a program in medicine or dentistry. They must demonstrate involvement in community or extracurricular college activities. Volunteering in the medical community here or abroad will also be considered. A GPA of 3.50 or higher is required. Financial need may be considered. To apply, use the Upper-class Named Scholarship Application available through KnightVision in January. Automatically renewable if the student maintains a GPA of 3.50 or higher and demonstrates continued involvement in community or extracurricular college activities. AJV Medical Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Derek and Jennifer VerMeulen for a Calvin student who is interested in a medical career. It honors the donor's sister who spent many months in a halo as a result of a jet ski accident. Through hard rehab and God's grace, the young woman has fully recovered from this accident and is enrolled in pre-med classes. Jennifer graduated from Calvin and is a nurse who observes those who, on a daily basis, overcome adversity. Adversity comes in many shapes and sizes and could be a struggle with depression, a family split, or any number of things. The VerMeulen's wish to help those who have persevered through adversity and then through this perseverance, wish to help others upon graduation. Candidates are Calvin students entering their junior or senior year who are pursuing a nursing degree or a pre-medical program and who demonstrate strong Christian character and a desire to model their Christianity in their work as a nurse and medical professional. The must be interested in a possible mentoring relationship with the donors. Requirements are a GPA of 3.00 or higher and evidence of financial need. Dr. and Mrs. Harvey J. Bratt Medical and Missions Scholarship
Harvey and Fran Bratt, medical doctor and registered nurse, respectively, established this scholarship for worthy young people who plan to pursue a medical career and who are in need of financial help. Dr. and Mrs. Bratt are both alumni of Calvin and they established this scholarship out of gratitude to the college for what it has meant to them and to God for what He has done for them. Candidates are Calvin students entering their junior or senior year. Factors taken into consideration are: unquestioned Christian commitment, intention to enter a medical career, interest in medical missions, interest in service to the poor and needy, and ethnic minority status. Arnold and Mary Dood Medical Services Scholarship
The children of Arnold and Mary Dood established this scholarship as a tribute to the Christian love and service exemplified by their parents throughout their careers in the medical service field. Candidates are Calvin students entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year who are pursuing a nursing or pre-medical degree and who exhibit a spirit of service and giving to others. God Has No Border Medical Scholarship
Dr. Daniel De Cook was raised by parents who were medical missionaries in Bangladesh. All of his earliest jobs were in the mission hospital which included sorting donated goods in the warehouse, pill counting in the pharmacy, and eventually scrubbing in for surgery and functioning as a medic in the clinic. God used those experiences to permanently create a place in Dr. De Cook's heart for medical care for the underserved. This scholarship was established to provide scholarship support to students whose lives and academic career have been touched in a similar way by God. Candidates are students entering their first year at Calvin who are interested in pursuing a biology or pre-med major. They must have an interest in public health. Nursing or teaching of the biologic sciences may also be considered (not just via an M.D. degree). Preference will be given to those coming from an underserved area (either primarily, as a national; or secondarily, as a missionary kid or similar). Candidates should also express an interest in "giving back" through service. Requirements are a GPA of 3.00 or higher and financial need. Students entering their first year at Calvin must write a letter giving information about their qualifications for the scholarship to the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid by February 1. William and Winifred Haeck Medical Scholarship
Dr. William and Mrs. Winifred Haeck are both graduates of Calvin. Four of their children also attended Calvin. When Dr. Haeck was a senior at Calvin, faculty members were instrumental in obtaining tuition scholarships for him to the University of Chicago and Rush Medical College. Dr. Haeck never forgot that assistance and now wishes to set up a scholarship as a small way to repay Calvin for the assistance and encouragement he received when he was a student. Candidates are Calvin students entering their junior or senior year who are pursuing a pre-medical program. Requirements are a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher and evidence of financial need. Medical Challenge Scholarship
The donors established this scholarship out of appreciation for the support that Student Academic Services provided for their child. They would like to encourage students with diagnosed learning disabilities who must utilize alternative learning strategies to bolster academic success, especially those students who plan to pursue careers in nursing or other medical fields. Candidates are Calvin students entering their junior or senior year who are nursing students or pre-med students with a learning disability. They must demonstrate strong Christian character and a desire to model their Christianity in their work as a nurse or medical profession. First preference is given to nursing students and second preference is given to pre-med students, however, any student with a learning disability may be considered. They must be using (or planning to use) the services provided by the Office of Services to Students with Disabilities. Requirements are a GPA of 2.70 or higher and evidence of financial need. No separate application is required. Current recipients will be given equal consideration with other candidates.
Dr. and Mrs. Bernard Meeuwsen Medical Scholarship
Dr. and Mrs. Bernard Meeuwsen of Grand Rapids, MI, established this scholarship out of gratitude for what God has done for their family and in appreciation of what Calvin has meant to their family. Dr. Meeuwsen is a graduate of Calvin and a number of the Meeuwsens' children have graduated from Calvin. Candidates are Calvin students entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year who are pursuing a nursing or pre-medical program. This scholarship was established by Dr. Paul and Mrs. Thelma Schutt of Grand Rapids, MI, in appreciation for the excellent education that they and their three children received at Calvin. In gratitude for the successful careers in medicine and nursing, the Schutts have established this scholarship for students pursuing a pre-medical or nursing program. Candidates are Calvin students entering their junior or senior year, with preference given to those who demonstrate a strong Christian character and a caring personality. Dr. Corwin G. and Mrs. Ina June VanderVeer and their children established this scholarship in appreciation for the good counsel and caring mentoring they received while at Calvin. The VanderVeer family has been very active in medicine and it is their desire to help support a pre-med or nursing student. Candidates are students entering their junior or senior year who are pursuing a degree in pre-medicine or nursing and who demonstrate a strong Christian character and a caring personality. Victor VerMeulen Medical Scholarship
Dr. Victor and Mrs. Mildred VerMeulen of Grand Rapids, MI, established this scholarship in honor of their son, a Calvin alumnus. Dr. VerMeulen practiced as an orthodontist in Grand Rapids for many years and Mrs. VerMeulen is an alumna of Calvin. Candidates are Calvin students entering their junior or senior year who are pursuing a nursing or pre-med program. Also considered is the student's potential for Christian service in medicine.
