Calvin's Programs - Pre-Medical

What should you major in?

Nationally, about one-half of medical school applicants are biology majors of some type. However, you would have just as good a chance of being accepted to medical school with a music, history, or any other major. So, you should select a major in a field that you enjoy, where you can get good grades; something your really good at.

Calvin's biology B.S. program has strong research, quantitative, and interdisciplinary components. Choose the B.S. degree program if you plan to pursue professional, advanced-degree programs in medicine (human, dental, veterinary) and other health-care, research, or management positions.

Talk this over with a pre-medical/dental advisor and your major advisor.

When should you select a major?

You should select a major by the end of your sophomore year, and preferably before.

labWhat specific courses do you need to get into medical school?

The course requirements are really minimal. Specifically, you should have 3 courses in molecular and organismal biology (Biology 141, 205, and 206), Chemistry 103-104, and 261-262, Physics 221-222, and many medical schools recommend (or require) two math courses (e.g., Mathematics 132 and 143). Some schools may have other specific requirements, so check with the pre-medical advisor if you have questions. You may also refer to the timeline for success for a more detailed, semester breakdown of requirements.

What about the Early Assurance Program with Michigan State?

Calvin College and MSU signed an agreement that links pre-med Calvin students to MSU’s medical school. The EAP provides an enhanced opportunity for admission to medical school for up to three pre-med students who qualify for the program.

What about math?

Few medical schools require calculus, but most recommend one semester of calculus and/or a semester of statistics. Others require or recommend 1-2 semesters of college mathematics. A list of schools that specifically require calculus is available from the pre-medical advisor.

Are there core requirements?

Yes. The liberal arts core requirements at Calvin are designed to provide an educational foundation from a Christian perspective.  Not fulfilling core will result in a graduation delay.
