Careers in Medicine

Hessel Bouma III

How can you know if this is for you?

Do you have what it takes to be a physician? Three cornerstones of a successful career in medicine:

  • A love for learning in general
  • A true intellectual curiosity about medicine in particular
  • A strong desire to help others.

Being smart and doing well in the sciences are obviously important components of being a successful physician. However, do not fall into a medical career because you have done well in the sciences. Although this is a necessary requirement, you must also be able to relate well with people.

What are the options in medicine?

At Calvin there are programs that lead to four careers in medicine.

There are two paths to becoming a doctor: allopathic medicine, which leads to an M.D. , or osteopathic medicine, which leads to a D.O.

Studying podiatric medicine or becoming a physician assistant are other medical career options.
