Students participate in 2008 Model UN conference

chile signIn November 2008, the weekend before Thanksgiving, fourteen Calvin College students joined 1,400 other college students from across the nation at the American Model United Nations (AMUN) Conference in Chicago. This conference is designed to simulate the operation of the United Nations, and involves three and one-half days of intensive, back-to-back simulations of various United Nations committees and commissions. Approximately 100 participating colleges from the United States and abroad represent 130 countries. In 2008, Calvin represented Chile on the General Assembly Plenary and its First, Second, Third and Fourth Committees.

The ECLAC team of Ana Stutler and Dan Holtrop were voted by their fellow participants as the best delegation in their group.

Professor Amy Patterson of the political science department usually directs Calvin's MUN group, and will teach the related course, POLS 285 Model United Nations, in fall 2009 when Calvin will represent Egypt. This fall, as Professor Patterson led the Calvin semester in Ghana, the course and the conference were led by Professor Douglas Koopman.
