News and Events: Matt Logan

Calvin's nominee for the Carnegie Junior Fellows Program

matt-loganAs a participant in the 2008 McGregor Summer Research Program, Matt Logan worked as a research assistant for Professor Westra on a book chapter examining US perspectives on international order. At the end of the summer, Matt applied some of his new-found insight to US climate change policy, presenting a paper on the subject at the Michigan Conference of Political Scientists in October. The paper examines the recent policy history of the United States in climate change negotiations, using organizational theory to explain the cooperation problem posed by global climate change and the potential solution posed by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). He developed this conference paper into an Honors paper for POLS 309: International Organizations & Law. Matt's paper also served as the basis for an essay he wrote as part of his application to the Carnegie Endowment Junior Fellows Program. Thanks to his excellent essay, Matt was selected to be the Calvin College representative. He now is awaiting word on whether he will be selected by the Carnegie Endowment as one of ten students who will work for a year as a research assistant in Washington, D.C.
