This spiral galaxy was originally discovered by William Herschel in 1784. This unique spiral galaxy is located in the Andromeda constellation. This galaxy is also approximately 30 million light-years away and about 100 million light years across. There are several unique features about this galaxy. The dust lane that splits the galaxy makes it a unique case study. The abnormal amount of dust and density of the dust lane could be attributed to high activity from supernovas. The dust blocks the blue wave length of light giving the image its slightly red appearance.
The spiral galaxy NGC 891 is viewed from an edge on angle. The galaxy has a dense lane of dust that blocks a majority of the blue light from the galaxy. The mainly orange and red color of the image, shows that the galaxy has a had volatile past, possibly explained by supernovas. The linear size of the galaxy is approximately 85 million light years.
