Crab Nebula

The Crab Nebula was first discovered in 1731 by British amateur astronomer John Bevis. This nebula is one of the most famous ones due to the expanding cloud of gas created in the explosion of a star as supernova which was observed in the year 1054 AD. The nebula consists of the material ejected in the supernova explosion, which has been spread over a volume approximately 10 light years in diameter, and is still expanding at the very high velocity of about 1,800 km/sec.

The Crab Nebula has a green tint, and has an incredibly bright center. This bright center is due to a Neutron Star in which the electrons difuse out and create mass amounts of energy. This makes it glow so brightly. The ears of the Nebula are spread out around the left side and there it is also a more hazy white color. Overall, the image seems to transfer from clear to green when scanning it left to right. The outside of the Nebula appears red, which indicates the element Hydrogen.


The Crab Nebula's angular size is3.726 arc minutes.

Its linear size is .1138 light years across.
