Clown Face Nebula

The Clown Face Nebula also known as the Eskimo Nebula is a planetary nebula. This means it was formed by the material that is given off by a star when it has burned out. It has a bright middle with glowing greenish blue light around it.It was given its name as the Eskimo nebula because people believe that the outside glowing light looks like a parka hood over a persons head. It was discovered in 1787 by William Herschel. It displays many gas clouds surrounding it that give it that glowing look. The nebula is about 1/3 of a light year across and it is in the Milky Way Galaxy. It is about 3,000 light years away and it is close to the constellation Gemini.

The Clown Face Nebula as seen above gives off a very green glowing appearance. You can tell that it is gaseous because of the glowing that comes off of the center point. You can also see that in the outside glowing ring that there is a tint of red or orange. These reddish orange filaments are very unusual and light- year long. They are faintly visible on the bottom edge of the Nebula in this picture and they are much more visible in pictures taken by the Hubble telescope. The inner color is being pushed out from the particles of the central star. The Clown Face nebula is about 1 arcminute in size. The linear size of the Clown Face Nebula is about .67 light-years. The Clown Face Nebula is expanding at a time of 60 km/sec. The whole nebula is being formed because of the explosion of the dyeing star in the middle.
