M65 Spiral Galaxy

The M65 galaxy is short for the Messier 65. It is a spiral type galaxy found alongside three other neighboring galaxies in the Leo Triplett of the Leo galaxy called the M65 group. It has a distance of about 35 million light years away. The galaxy has a tightly wound spiral with dust rings along the facing edge and the galaxy is composed of low dust and gas content. Some knots which could possibly be star forming regions can be seen near the dust lanes, however the spiral galaxy may be hiding other possible regions of star formation. The ratio of old stars to new stars is very high.

The M65 galaxy was originally descovered by Charles Messier in 1780, but due to an error by Admiral Smith, the discovery is assigned to Pierre mechain in 1960. By using a distance of 35 million LY, the angular size of the galaxy is determined to be about 7.57 minutes, and the linear size is therefore about 77,000 LY across.
