Research Interests:
Dr. Walhout graduated from
Calvin in 1988 and returned as a faculty member in 1996. He spent most
of the intervening years at the National Institute of Standards and Technology
in Gaithersburg, MD. As a member of the NIST group led by William D. Phillips
(1997 Nobel Laureate), he did his doctoral and postdoctoral research on
the dynamics of xenon atoms trapped by laser light. About a year before
coming back to Calvin, he took a NIST staff position and began studying
plasma sources of ultraviolet radiation. Dr. Walhout and his students
have been working on two experimental projects at Calvin, one involving
laser-trapped krypton atoms and the other dealing with the behavior of
novel dielectric-barrier discharge systems. These projects have been supported
financially by Calvin College, Research Corporation and the National Science
Foundation.
