October 5 - Access and Persistence of Minority Students in PhD STEM Programs
Margaret Mwenda, PhD, Faculty of Marketing, Davenport University
This seminar presentation is based on the findings of my dissertation Underrepresented Minority Students in STEM Doctoral Programs: The Role of Financial Support and Relationships with Faculty and Peers. In this seminar, I provide a summary of the methods and participants, followed by the key findings relating to these two important issues that determine minority students' access and persistence in science graduate programs. I also discuss important challenges they face that influence their decision to persist or leave the program or the university entirely. Finally, I highlight several lessons we, as educators, can draw from the findings of this study.
