We celebrate the Calvin careers of three Physics & Astronomy professors
What will they be up to in the coming years?
Deborah Haarsma has been appointed President of BioLogos. BioLogos is a ministry that celebrates the harmony of science and biblical faith through events for evangelical leaders, a rich website of educational resources, and a grants program for scholars and teachers. For Deb, this new phase of her career builds on her science and faith work at Calvin, where she wrote Origins: Christian Perspectives on Creation, Evolution, and Intelligent Design with her husband and colleague Loren.
Steve Steenwyk and his wife Nancy will be looking forward to travel and adventure in Michigan and North America’s beautiful places in their truck-camper, including winters in Florida. He looks forward to more time for outdoor hobbies including fishing, gardening and nature photography, as well as more time for music, including perhaps learning an instrument. He’ll also be doing volunteer work at church and conservation societies, including Audubon and Trout Unlimited. Their travels will also allow them to encompass spending time with 4 generations of Steenwyks.
David Van Baak will, right after Commencement 2014, be 'going back to school' as a guest student of Calvin's May Interim class IDIS W14: "Camino de Santiago: The Christian Tradition of Pilgrimage.” He is planning on walking 500 km from Burgos to Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain. After that, David and his wife Nancy are planning on relocating to Buffalo, NY, to continue his collaboration with TeachSpin. TeachSpin produces equipment for upper division physics labs and a number of their products were initially developed by David.
