University of Michigan Library Humanities Text Initiative Resources

Although an ambitious project, the Humanities Text Initiative's list of public-access resources is quite small. Contains some religious texts, as well as other material.


Christian Classics Ethereal Library

A collection of more than 30 books, essays, and poems by Christian theologians and philosophers. Features the full texts of most of the works, including The Confessions of St. Augustine and The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Produced by Wheaton College in Illinois.

The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy

A large collection of classic texts as well as original submissions maintained by James Fieser.

Cultural Logic

An online journal devoted to Marxist theory and practice. The journal is published twice a year and accepts poetry, essays and book and film reviews.

The Electronic Journal of Analytic Philosophy

A focused, well-designed site that publishes philosophical papers in a wide variety of electronic formats.

Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy

Produced by scholars at Stanford University, the encyclopedia offers entries on the contributions of philosophers throughout history. It is designed so that its entries can change with new advances in scholarship

Journal of Consciousness Studies

A peer-reviewed interdisciplinary journal about perception and the relationship between the mind and the brain. The online version contains some articles from previous volumes in full text.

Episteme Links

Episteme Links is a comprehensive guide to the philosophy resources found on the net. This site has thousands of well-sorted links, over 300 images of philosophers, huge listings of discussions groups, newsgroups, and much more.

Faith Quest

FaithQuest is a web site for those souls who have embarked upon a faith quest, and feel as though their search has left them backed up against a "wall."

Academic Dialogue on Applied Ethics

A series of online ethics discussions, led by philosophers at Carnegie Mellon University, on such issues as abortion, euthanasia, and pornography. Participants are chosen for their informed perspectives. Transcripts of the discussions are available.

The Critical Thinking Community

Information on the theory and practice of critical thinking. The site, provided by Sonoma State University, includes techniques for teaching critical thinking; a resource center for instructional materials; a library of articles and reference materials; and a list of coming events.

Ethics Updates

Provides abstracts of articles, and course syllabi related to the study of ethics. Up-to-date information on such contemporary issues as abortion and euthanasia is also available.

The Secular Web

Humanities OnLine Web Site

Directories of and updates on the Humanities OnLine Initiative, or H-Net, a collaborative, on-line project sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Includes an index of the more than 70 discipline-specific mailing lists run by the project, a directory of mailing-list moderators, and a list of book reviews written for H-Net.

Institute for Humane Studies

An information source maintained by George Mason University for students interested in scholarship on individual liberties and rights. The site contains information of fellowship programs for graduate and undergraduate students, news of conferences on careers in academe, links to a bibliographic collection of classical liberal scholarship, and the electronic editions of The Humane Studies Review .

Mind Uploading Home Page

A WWW site that describes and discusses the possibility of creating computer copies of human brains, and muses on the philosophical implications of such a capability.

The University of Chicago Philosophy Project

A moderated forum for the scholarly discussion of philosophical works. Includes several topical discussion groups, each with its own administrator; participants tend toward comments and technical analysis in the form of papers and abstracts.

Philosohpy Research Base

The Philosophy Research Base, categorized by history, subject and author, is a meta-index featuring thousands of annotated links, text resources and community services for students and teachers conducting research in the field of philosophy. The PRB is divided into 15 different webs, including ancient, medieval, modern, 19th century, 20th century, ecology, feminism, ecofeminism, major philosophical topics, including postmodernism, existentialism, phenomenology, analytic philosophy, gender theory, etc. The PRB encourages suggestions, URL submissions, Calls for Papers, and includes a bi-monthly Newsletter.

ORGANIZATIONS AND DEPRARTMENTS

American Philosophical Association

The American Philosophical Association is the main professional organization for philosophers in the United States. Founded in1900, its mission is to promote the exchange of ideas among philosophers, to encourage creative and scholarly activity inphilosophy, to facilitate the professional work and teaching of philosophers, and to represent philosophy as a discipline.

Notre Dame Department of Philosophy

In addition to housing the undergraduate and graduate programs, the debarment hosts the Center for the Philosophy of Religion, the Maritain Center, the Medieval Institute, and the Reilly Center for Science, Technology, and Values, as well as publishing the American Philosophical Quarterly and the Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic.

Society of Christian Philosophers

The Society of Christian Philosophers was organized in 1978 to promote fellowship among Christian Philosophers and to stimulatestudy and discussion of issues which arise from their Christian and philosophical commitments.
