SEPTEMBER 3-5 FIRST YEAR STUDENT CLIMBING CENTER KICK-OFF – FREE
The Climbing Center will open Thursday, September 3-5 for FIRST YEAR STUDENTS ONLY.
Thursday, September 3: 3:00-9:00pm
Friday, September 4: 3:00-9:00pm
Saturday, September 5: 12:00-6:00pm
Kick off your outdoor year with a night of Climbing at the Calvin Climbing Center. Space will be limited to 24 students at a time. Please plan on arriving “on the hour” for belay training and instruction. All equipment and instruction will be provided. No sign up necessary.
SEPTEMBER 8: CLIMBING CENTER OPENS TO ALL STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF - FREE
Please see the Calvin Climbing Center link for all information and scheduling related to the Climbing Center. New for this year, we will offer Tuesday night clinics focused on technique, training, single pitch systems, and multi-pitch systems. We will add an open climbing block to Sunday afternoon. Our lead program has been moved to Thursday evenings. And female climbers will continue to have an exclusive climbing time on Monday nights! Best of all…it’s FREE!
SEPTEMBER 11-13: Red River Gorge Climbing Weekend – FULL
Have you been climbing all summer? Join us for a Red River Gorge kick-off weekend. Plan on beautiful camping, great site and route selection, tasty food, and the best crag climbing in the lower 48! The cost is $65 and includes food, transportation, and camping. Please e-mailbtg3@students.calvin.edu to sign up for this kick off weekend. Space is limited to 12.
SEPTEMBER 18-20: 3rd Annual Calvin Century Ride “Tour De Leelanau” – 50, 63, and 100 Mile routes
Sign up by September 10 for a “half-century, metric century, or full century cycle tour planned for Michigan’s most beautiful Peninsula. We will camp together at the Lake Leelanau RV Park. The student cost is $45 for the weekend. This cost includes Friday and Saturday camping, Saturday meals, sag/first aid support, a bike mechanic, and a 3rd annual century t-shirt! SEPTEMBER 22 and 29: GRAND LEDGE CLIMBING - $12, 3:30-9pm
Sign up by Sept. 18 for an evening of outdoor climbing at Grand Ledge. Calvin instructors will provide transportation and equipment, teach safe climbing and belay technique, and offer feedback on climbing technique. Bring a brown bag dinner and 2 liters of water. Space limited to the first 9 to sign up. Waiver and med form required. Please sign up and pay at the Climbing Center.
SEPTEMBER 25-27: FREE “OUTDOOR” RENTAL EQUIPMENT WEEKEND
Reserve sleeping bags, backpacks, and pads by Wednesday, Sept. 23. Pick up gear between 4-6pm on Thursday, Sept. 24. Return gear clean and dry on Monday, Sept. 22 between 4-6pm. (See Equipment Rental). Enjoy a great weekend at Hoffmaster SP, Nordhouse Dunes, Sleeping Bear, or the Manistee River Trail…FREE on Calvin Outdoor Rec! OCTOBER 24-26: 6th ANNUAL RED RIVER GORGE ROCK CLIMBING RENDEVOUS - $65
Sign ups begin Sept. 11 for this very popular weekend. Space is limited to the first 11 to sign up. Plan on beautiful camping, great site and route selection, tasty food, and the best crag climbing in the lower 48! Students planning on this trip will want to train by climbing 2-3 time weekly for the 6 weeks that lead up to this weekend, as the “Red” requires strong hands and endurance! Waiver and med form required. If you own your own equipment, feel free join us for free camping and food ($15), but you will climb on your own equipment at your own risk. Space is limited to 30 total participants. Sign up and pay at the Calvin Climbing Center.
NOVEMBER 30: 1st Annual Calvin “Inter-Campus” Top-Rope and Sport Lead Climbing Competition – Fundraiser for Camp Tall Turf
This fun event is open to all students, faculty, and staff. We will offer gender specific, novice, intermediate, advanced, and lead groupings. The cost for this event is $16. $10 from every registration will be donated to the Camp Tall Turf scholarship fund. The other $6 will get you a great 1st annual t-shirt! Please sign up and pay at the Climbing Center by November 23. New comp routes will be set over the Thanksgiving break. APEX OUTDOORS will donate prizes for the top 2 places in each category!
