WINTER OUTDOOR RECREATION SCHEDULE (2008)

WEEKLY EVENTS:
MONDAY'S AT CANNONSBURG SKI AREA:  Come on out for an informal evening of skiing/boarding at our local ski area.  Lift Tickets after 6pm are $10.

JANUARY 31- APRIL 17 CLIMBING NIGHT AT INSIDE MOVES: Join other Calvin rock climbers on Thursday nights at Inside Moves Climbing gym.  This is an informal time of enjoying climbing together. Day passes are $8

FEBRUARY 14 ADVENTURE GRANT DEADLINE:  Funding your Wilderness Spring Break Trip
Calvin wants to help you off-set the costs of your Wilderness Spring Break trip.  Students will self organize and plan a “common” adventure trip.  Criteria for achieving a grant:

  • Read the Adventure Grant Description; understand the criteria; Agree to the guidelines
  • Organize a group of 6-12 Calvin students
  • Research and plan your trip together; submit a trip plan to rmw3@calvin by February 14
  • Gain up to $75 per person (low trip grant $300/high trip grant $900)
  • Travel and Adventure AT YOUR OWN RISK
  • Submit 2 pictures, a one paragraph summary and receipts for fuel, rental vehicles, food, permits, rental equipment, and camping fees; receive your agreed upon adventure grant total.

SPRING OUTDOOR RECREATION SCHEDULE (2008)
APRIL-MAY ROAD CYCLING GROUP : Meet Tuesday Mornings at 7:15am for a few laps around Reeds Lake and Sunday afternoon at 2pm for a longer distance ride.  All rides meet in front of Beets-Veenstra.

ADVENTURE RACE TRAINING :  Contact Simona Goy at if you are interested in weekly training for regional adventure races.

    • Thursday March 6:  Pick up Rental equipment between 4-6pm
    • Monday March 17:  Return Rental Equipment (dry and clean!)
    • Thursday March 20:  Return Rental Equipment (dry and clean!)

MARCH 31 CENTURY ROAD CYCLING KICK-OFF MEETING:  Train together for a June 1 Century

APRIL 18  RED RIVER ROCK CLIMBING “GATHERING IN THE GORGE”: 
This is the 5th annual “un-official” Spring Rock Climbing Rendezvous in the “RED”.   Those who are interested in meeting up in the gorge for a weekend of climbing must provide their own equipment and should plan on traveling and climbing at their own risk.  During the “advising weekend” we will partner with the RRGCC or the Friends of Muir Valley for a day of service.  We will camp, eat, serve, and climb as a Calvin community.

FALL OUTDOOR RECREATION SCHEDULE (2008)

SEPTEMBER 11-NOVEMBER 20 CLIMBING CLUB NIGHT:   Join other Calvin rock climbers on Thursday nights at Inside Moves Climbing gym.  This is an informal time of enjoying climbing with one another.  Students are encouraged to purchase 6 week climbing pass.

SEPTEMBER 11    ROCK CLIMBING KICK-OFF PARTY       $5        6-10pm
Meet at Inside Moves Rock Climbing Gym @ 6pm for a FREE belay lesson, rental equipment, and $5 climbing evening pass.  This is a great time to get into climbing and meet others with similar outdoor interests.  FREE Transportation will be provided to the first 11 to sign up.   Sign up and Pay at Cokes and Clubs.  (Gym waiver required)

SEPTEMBER 15-OCTOBER 23  6 Week UNLIMITED ROCK CLIMBING PASS to Inside Moves  $45
Sign up at Inside Move Rock Climbing Gym for an unlimited 6 weeks of climbing.  You must rent or own your equipment.  This is required training for the fingers if you plan to sign up for the Red River Gorge fall trip scheduled for Oct. 24-26

SEPTEMBER 19   FREE RENTAL EQUIPMENT WEEKEND: 
Reserve sleeping bags, backpacks, pads, stoves, and cook sets by Wednesday SEPT 17.  Pick Up gear between 4-6pm on Thursday SEPT 18.  Return gear clean and dry on Monday SEPT 22 between 4-6pm. (See Equipment Rental)

SEPTEMBER 19-21    RIVER CANOE, SEA KAYAK, ADVENTURE RACE CLINIC, FREE CAMPING
1st Annual Manistee National Forest Wilderness Rendezvous – FREE!
Come together for a free weekend of camping, mountain biking, backpacking, river canoeing, and sea kayaking in the Manistee National Forest.  This weekend is an informal time to play in the woods and spend the weekend as you choose.  Calvin Outdoor Rec will secure free camping and offer free River Canoe Trips (with shuttles), Intro Sea Kayaking clinics, and an Adventure Race Clinic.  If you are interested in the River Canoe Trips, Sea Kayaking Clinic, or Adventure Race Clinic, you will need to sign up by SEPT. 17 and submit a liability waiver.  Food, Transportation, and Equipment (see FREE rental equipment) are on your own.  Please e-mail for maps to rendezvous location.

SEPTEMBER 25   GRAND LEDGE CLIMBING     $12                 3:30-9pm
Sign up by Sept. 23 for an evening of outdoor climbing at Grand Ledge.  Calvin instructors will provide transportation and equipment, teach safe climbing and belay technique, and offer feedback on climbing technique.  Bring a brown bag dinner and 2 liters of water.  Space limited to first 9 to sign up.  Waiver and med form required.

OCTOBER 24-26    5th ANNUAL RED RIVER GORGE ROCK CLIMBING RENDEVOUS           $65
Sign Ups begin Sept. 11 for this very popular weekend.  Space is limited to the first 11 to sign up.  Plan on beautiful camping, great site and route selection, tasty food, and the best crag climbing in the lower 48!  The 6 week Inside Moves Climbing Pass is required training for the advising break trip, as the “red” requires strong hands and endurance!  Waiver and med form required.  If you own your own equipment, feel free join us for free camping and food ($15), but you will climb on your own equipment at your own risk.
