SEPTEMBER 7: CLIMBING CENTER OPENS TO ALL STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF - FREE

SEPTEMBER 10-12: Red River Gorge Climbing Weekend
Have you been climbing all summer? Join us for a Red River Gorge kick-off weekend. Plan on beautiful camping, great site and route selection, tasty food, and the best crag climbing in the lower 48! The cost is $65 and includes food, transportation, and camping. Please e-mailrmw3@students.calvin.edu to sign up for this kick off weekend. Space is limited to 12. SEPTEMBER 17-18 Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes Sea Kayaking and Road Cycling Weekend $35
Sign up by September 15 for a weekend kayak and road cycle tour of the Leelanau Peninsula. We will camp together at the Platte River Campground in Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore. Plan on guided kayaking and road cycling groups tailored to abilities. All equipment will be provided. Calvin will haul the bikes and boats. Space is limited to 12. Please sign up and pay at the Climbing Center.
SEPTEMBER 22: GRAND LEDGE CLIMBING $12, 3:30-9pm
Sign up by Sept. 18 for an evening of outdoor climbing at Grand Ledge. Calvin instructors will provide transportation and equipment, teach safe climbing and belay technique, and offer feedback on climbing technique. Bring a brown bag dinner and 2 liters of water. Space limited to the first 9 to sign up. Waiver and med form required. Please sign up and pay at the Climbing Center.
OCTOBER 1-3: 7th ANNUAL RED RIVER GORGE ROCK CLIMBING RENDEVOUS $65
Sign ups begin Sept. 11 for this very popular weekend. Space is limited to the first 11 to sign up. Plan on beautiful camping, great site and route selection, tasty food, and the best crag climbing in the lower 48! Students planning on this trip will want to train by climbing 2-3 time weekly for the 6 weeks that lead up to this weekend, as the "Red" requires strong hands and endurance! Waiver and med form required. If you own your own equipment, feel free join us for free camping and food ($15), but you will climb on your own equipment at your own risk. Space is limited to 30 total participants. Sign up and pay at the Calvin Climbing Center.
OCT 27 MANISTEE RIVER Adventure Race: Hiking, Canoeing, and Road Biking $35 per team
Sign up by September 22 for our first annual inter-campus Adventure Race weekend of backpacking and river canoeing along the Manistee River Trail. We will Paddle, Bike, and Hike on Wednesday of Advising Break. Space is limited to 16 (8 teams of 2). Please sign up and pay at the Climbing Center.
Winter/Spring Schedule (2010)
FEB 5, 12, 19, 26, AND MARCH 6 CABERFAE SKI AND SNOWBOARD TRIPS $10
We will leave Calvin every Friday for Caberfae Peaks Resort in the free “SKI VAN” at 4pm from dorm road. Participants will need to bring $10 for lift tickets and either a brown bag dinner or cash for their meal. The van will return to Calvin by midnight. Please sign up and pay at the Climbing Center.
FEBRUARY/MARCH: BIKE MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR CLASS
We will offer a short course in cycle maintenance and repair every Tuesday afternoon from 4-5:30pm during March and April. Cost is $15 per person. Space is limited to 8 students. Please sign up and pay at the Climbing Center.
MARCH 10 ANNUAL OUTDOOR EQUIPMENT SALE TRACK AND TENNIS BUILDING
This is a great opportunity to buy cheap lightly used outdoor gear. There will be a variety of equipment available. The sale will run from 4pm-9pm on Wednesday March 10. Please contact kab37@calvin.edu if you have gear to sell.
MARCH 6: 1st Annual Calvin “Inter-Campus” Top-Rope and Sport Lead Climbing Competition – Fundraiser for Camp Tall Turf
This fun event is open to all students, faculty, and staff. We will offer gender specific, novice, intermediate, advanced, and lead groupings. The cost for this event is $15. $10 from every registration will be donated to the Camp Tall Turf scholarship fund. The other $5 will get you a great 1st annual t-shirt and cover the cost of great route setting! Please sign up and pay at the Climbing Center. APEX OUTDOORS will donate prizes for the top 2 places in each category! Please sign up and pay at the Climbing Center.
SPRING BREAK ADVENTURE GRANTS
Put a group together for a Spring Break Adventure Trip and Calvin will help fund the trip! During 2008 Calvin gave away $5000 to close to 100 students! Get in on the Adventure Grant Program for 2009. Applications need to be submitted by March 3.
APRIL 24-26 RED RIVER GORGE ROCK CLIMBING
This is the 6th annual "un-official" Spring Rock Climbing Rendezvous in the "RED." Those who are interested in meeting up in the gorge for a weekend of climbing must provide their own equipment and should plan on traveling and climbing at their own risk.
