Financial Aid
Scholarships
(The following applies to Calvin students only;
non-Calvin participants in off-campus programs are not eligible for any
Calvin financial aid.)
Each semester, the Off-Campus Programs Office offers two scholarships
for participants in a Calvin-sponsored program abroad (China, Britain,
France, Ghana, Honduras (2), Hungary, and Spain).
For Fall 2008, three scholarships are available to a student planning
to go on a semester-length Calvin program abroad (Honduras Spanish, China, Ghana, Hungary, France).
Applications are due in the OCP office in HH 322 by 4:30 p.m. on April 15. It is the student's responsibility to make sure all parts
of the application have been received by the OCP office by the deadline, including the recommendations.
Incomplete applications will NOT be considered.
Requirements for the Bytwerk and International Opportunities scholarships are:
- Junior or senior status by Fall 2008
- 2.5 - 3.39 GPA for Kate Bytwerk Grant (note upper cut-off point); 3.0 or higher for International Oppurtunity Scholarship
- Applying to a Fall Calvin program outside the U.S. (Honduras Spanish, China, Ghana, Hungary, France).

Miller Scholarship
The Bradley C. Miller Scholarship is for $1500. One scholarship will be awarded for the Fall semester for a student participating in one of the non-Western European Calvin programs (China, Ghana, Honduras, or Hungary).
Requirements for the Bradley C. Miller scholarships are:
- Sophomore or Junior status by Fall 2008
- 3.0 or higher GPA
- Applying to a non-Western Europe Calvin program

This information applies only to aid directly from Calvin. It does not
affect any federal or state aid or loans that a student may have.
Calvin-Sponsored Programs
100%+ Full portability of financial aid. Additional financial
aid possible, up to 30% of additional costs (over the cost of an on-campus
semester). No additional application is needed; students are automatically
considered once accepted to a program.

Level I: 100% of regular Calvin aid--but no additional aid for:

- College Year in Athens
- Dordt College SPICE program (Netherlands)
- Japan Center for Michigan Colleges and Universities
- SPEAK (German language study in Marburg, Germany)
- Int'l Sustainable Development Studies Institute (Thailand) for IDS majors
Level II: 50% of Calvin financial aid may be applied to these programs:
- Council for Christian Colleges and Universities Program
- Scholar's Semester in Oxford
- Russian Studies
- Latin American Studies (excluding Adv. Lang & Lit. track)
- Partner programs in Australia and Uganda (Approved for financial aid only if a significant number of courses in major and/or minor are taken. Consult the Director of Off-Campus Programs)
- Los Angeles Film Center
- Middle East Studies
- Contemporary Music Center
- Au Sable Institute
- Budapest Mathematics (through St. Olaf College)
- Creation Care Studies Program in Belize or New Zealand
- Daystar University in Nairobi, Kenya
- Handong Universtiy in Pohang, Korea

No Calvin financial aid, but federal and state grants and loans
are available if enrolled through Calvin.
"Outside" Scholarships
Three outside scholarships are available for spring-semester study abroad. Please READ CAREFULLY the summary information below and go to the designated website for further information if you believe you qualify to apply for one of these awards.
"NSEP"
The National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Scholarships offer a unique opportunity for U.S. undergraduates [US citizens] to study abroad. NSEP awards scholarships to American students for study of world regions critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin American & the Caribbean, and the Middle East). The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.

Gilman Scholarships
This program offers a competition for awards for study abroad, for US citizen students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2-year or 4-year college or university. [Check your KV financial aid report if you are uncertain of whether you get a Federal Pell grant.]
Selected by competition, recipients are awarded up to $5000 to defray the costs associated with studying abroad.

Freeman Asia Scholarships
The Freeman-ASIA Program aims to increase the number of U.S.
undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia by providing them
with the information and financial assistance they will need. Award
recipients are expected to share their experiences with their home
campuses to encourage study abroad in Asia and to spread greater
understanding of Asian peoples and cultures within their home
communities.
