Britain - Courses

All students will be enrolled in the Studies in British Culture course and in the special topics course "Christianity in Medieval and Early Modern England." See below for course descriptions.

STBR 312: Studies in British Culture
A topical introduction to political, historical, religious, artistic, and popular aspects of the culture of Great Britain . The course engages the culture through a combination of classroom and experiential learning. Includes speakers, field trips, excursions and tours (4 sem. hrs., Cross-Cultural Engagement core requirement).

STBR 230: Christianity in Medieval and Early Modern England
This course will examine the interplay of religion, culture, and politics in Britain from the arrival of Christianity in the early Middle Ages to the dawn of the Enlightenment at the end of the seventeenth century. After comparing the archaeological record of the early Anglo-Saxon settlement with legendary traditions such as the King Arthur story, and examining the coming of Christianity to England in waves of Celtic and Roman missionaries, we will consider the role of the Church in medieval English society from the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms and the Norman conquest to the Reformation era, and the radical transformation in English cultural and political life brought by the Reformation, the rise of Puritanism, and the religious struggles of the seventeenth century.(3 sem. hrs., Global-Historical Studies)

Instructors: Dr. Frans van Liere, Dr. Kate van Liere

Courses at York St. John University

Students will select their remaining two courses from the offerings of York St. John University. The courses (called "modules") are described at http://www2.yorksj.ac.uk/default.asp?Page_ID=3855&Parent_ID=2055.

To use the module listing:
1. Find the department in which you would like to take a course (module). The various departments are divided differently at York St. John, so you may need to try more than one (for example, "film studies" modules are listed separate from "communications.")

2. Check the box by that category and click on the "Show module list" button at the bottom.

3. Look for modules noted as Sem 2. The level column indicates the degree of previous preparation you should have before enrolling in that module.

4. To see the course description, click on the module title.

Important note re credits: Calvin awards 1 semester hour of credit for each 5 YSJ credits (for example, a 20-credit module will earn a 4 Calvin semester hours. (Ignore the notes on the website about US/Canadian credits. That is not valid for you!)

The "Assessment" information at the end of the module description explains what will be used in determining your grade. If a module requires a final exam, you will need to remain at YSJ until approximately May 23. If you opt for modules without a final exam, you will be able to leave earlier if you arrange your own transportation.
