The Art of Traveling Well Awards

Travel does what good novelists also do to the life of everyday, placing it like a picture in a frame or a gem in its setting, so that the intrinsic qualities are made more clear. Travel does this with the very stuff that everyday life is made of, giving to it the sharp contour and meaning of art. -Freya Stark

What's the contest all about?

Explore, Dream, Discover...and then contribute to our Annual Art of Traveling Well contest! This contest is designed to highlight the power of our off-campus programs to create educational, responsible, and culturally rich travel experiences for students.

We are looking for photos, videos, and stories that demonstrate how your off-campus experience has changed you.  How has it deepened your relationship to God, to others, and to the world around you?  How has it helped you to learn from others and their culture?  How have you put your new awareness and empathy into action as you return home?

This contest challenges you to submit a photograph, essay or video that interprets some aspect of your time abroad.  Emphasis should be placed on describing the relationships, experiences, and places that helped you travel well – responsibly, sustainably, and culturally -- and transformed your vision of the world in some way.

  • Photograph(s): There are 2 categories in the photography division -- single photograph and photo series. The photo series should be 3-5 photos that are connected in some way. For the photo series, please include a brief statement about how the images are related to each other.
  • Essay/Written Reflection:  (1500 words or less). Anything pertaining to your semester program. Your choice.
  • Video (Multi-media):  Videos can be up to 10 minutes long and include any aspect of your trip.
