On March 14 and 15, 2005, Mary Flikkema MSN, RN and Mary Molewyk Doornbos PhD, RN along with Ruth Groenhout PhD (Philosophy ? Calvin College) and Cheryl Brandsen PhD (Sociology and Social Work ? Calvin College) presented a symposium entitled Ethics, Faith, and the Caring Professions? at Carlow College in Carlow, Ireland. Carlow College is one of Ireland?s oldest educational institutions. During its 200-year history, Carlow College has educated generations of politicians, priests, poets, and leaders in the public life of their day. In April, 2004 the Centre for Ethics at Carlow College was established. This Centre is in keeping with the College?s mission and tradition of serving the community and of providing educational opportunities. The Centre organizes public lectures, events and short courses that focus on ethical issues as they arise in the professions and in contemporary society.
Dr. Santiago Sia, Dean at Carlow College, extended the invitation to the Calvin College group to present this symposium. The symposium began on Monday evening, March 14th, with Dr. Ruth Groenhout's talk on the topic "Ethics and the Caring Professions".

Senator Fergal Browne, Fine Gael Spokesperson on Health and Care, chaired Dr. Groenhout's session. The first session on Tuesday was presented by Dr. Mary Molewyk Doornbos on the topic "Seeing the Image of God in the Least of These: Caregiver/Client Relationships in Mental Health Practices". Sr. Consilio, director of the Cuan Mhuire Rehabilitation Centre, Athy, chaired Dr. Doornbos' session. Professor Mary Flikkema gave the third presentation, which was entitled "Ethical Issues in the Acute Care Setting". Mr. Mervyn Taylor, Project Manager: Care for People Dying in Hospitals Project, Irish Hospice Foundation, chaired Professor Flikkema's session. The final session of the symposium was presented by Dr. Cheryl Brandsen and was entitled "Ethics and the Environment of Caring Professions". Mr. Peter Kieran, Regional Co-coordinator, Child-Care Services, Health Service Executive, was the chair of this final session.
