Nursing Faculty Present at American Association of Colleges of Nursing Baccalaureate Education Conference

Cheryl Feenstra RNC, PhD and Gail Landheer Zandee, RN, MSN presented a paper entitled "Using Student Obtained Research Data to Design Educational Experiences in the Community" at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Baccalaureate Education Conference. The conference was held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in November of 2004. The abstract of their paper is as follows:

Community-based participatory research is the method used to develop and maintain neighborhood partnerships and to link the curriculum to each neighborhood. Residents and students are involved in creating the research tool and gathering data. Results of the research then lead to a resident-driven strategic plan used to promote health and support responsible health choices in each neighborhood. Healthy People 2010 goals are incorporated into the strategic plan as evaluation measures. Nursing student learning activities are then formulated guided by these evidence-based strategic plans and the diverse strengths and needs of each neighborhood.

This presentation describes the community-based research process, its results, and the interventions that are being implemented as a result of the evidence obtained. It concludes with the benefits and challenges to students and faculty when using participatory research evidence in community educational experiences.
