News: 2010 Sigma Theta Tau Induction Ceremony

Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing

New Member Induction | November 20, 2010

The Kappa Epsilon Chapter – At – Large of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Nursing Honor Society was held November 20, 2010 at Prince Conference Center on the Calvin College campus.  This event saw 125 nursing students from the four colleges in this Chapter – At – Large inducted into the honor society.  Schools participating were Calvin College, Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, and Hope College.  This event had record attendance of approximately 350 persons attending as students brought guests and family to join this celebration along with faculty and other STTI members.

The key note speaker at this event was Rosemarie Rowney, MPH, RN, President of Haiti Nursing Foundation.  Her presentation was titled “Haiti: Nursing Against the Odds”.  She gave a short history of the nursing school and then told the awe-inspiring story of the role the nursing schools played in caring for the earthquake victims of Haiti in January, 2010, when they became the only healthcare providers for the region for five days until international aid reached them.  A full buffet breakfast was served after which, each school inducted their members in a ceremony that draped each student with the purple and white honor cords that signifies membership in STTI.

Calvin College faculty currently serving on the Kapp Epsilon Board as officers who took part in this induction ceremony include: Carol Rossman, Vise President, Judy Baker and Debra Bossenbroek, Faculty Counselors.  Cheryl Feenstra also took part as Chairperson of the Department of Nursing at Calvin College.  Muriel Larson was the official Kappa Epsilon photographer of this event.  Joke Ayoola and Gail Zandee also attended to honor the Calvin student inductees.

Calvin College inducted 21 members from the BSN nursing class of 2011.  Membership is granted to those who place in the top 35% of the graduating class, have exemplified the qualities of honor society membership, and have been successfully voted in by the membership – at – large.

Calvin College also selects one student to receive the “Excellence in Student Performance Award”.  Kristin Wiersma was the STTI 2010 Calvin recipient of this award.  Kristin takes top academic honors in her nursing classes and has exemplified service, leadership, and faith in her role at Calvin College.  Congratulations to Kristin and to each of the new inductees of the Class of 2011!  It is an honor to celebrate your accomplishments!

Congratulations to each of the Calvin College STTI inductees!
