Off-Campus Interim - Greece (2009)

students02Interim at Calvin offers many unique and exciting opportunities for students and faculty. One such opportunity was available to nursing majors in January 2008 through a course entitled, The Greek Connection: Embracing Transcultural Caring in Ancient and Modern Greece.

This course depicts Dr. Madeleine Leininger’s Theory of Culture care as a major focus.  Professor Muriel Larson, Assistant Professor of Nursing, has taught this course as one of the offerings of the Upper Midwest Association for Intercultural Education (UMAIE), a consortium of six liberal arts colleges, including Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD.

Professor Larson is a Professor Emerita from Augustana College, and brought this course to Calvin for the first time in January.  Students from Calvin can participate in the UMAIE courses as interim exchange students to any of the member colleges.  A senior nursing major from Calvin, Becky VanderVennen, was a part of this course, connecting not only with the culture in Greece, but with 23 other students from the UMAIE consortium.

UMAIE has approved this course again for January 2009, and Professor Larson is hopeful that other Calvin nursing students will enroll in this exciting opportunity to study transcultural care abroad in Greece during the Interim.
