General Information
Juries are the "final exams" for private lessons. You will perform for a panel of at least three music faculty members and be graded on your perfomance. Juries take place during the last week of the semester (before exam week.) Juries are required every other semester for students taking lessons at the 100 level and are required every semester for students taking lessons at the 200 or 300 level. Students who are taking their first semester of lessons are not expected to give a jury. Students giving recitals within six weeks of the jury exam date or students performing a solo work with a college ensemble within six weeks of the jury exam date are exempt from performing a jury during that semester.
Non-concentrates must present no more than five minutes, and concentrates no more than eight minutes, of music representative of their semester’s work. They must perform before a jury of at least three of the music faculty, each of whom will submit a jury grade to the student’s teacher who will then average these in determining the final exam grade. Each student fills out a Jury Sheet, secures the teacher’s signature, and submits this to the faculty present at the jury exam. Jury sheets are available here or from the music office.
