Knollcrest Music Camp - Classes & Ensembles

Senior Camp

August 4-8, 2008
Students entering 9th - 12th grades

Junior Camp

August 11-15, 2008
Students entering 7th & 8th grades

Please note: Senior Camp will be held BEFORE Junior Camp.

KMC 2008Classes

Chamber Music (Senior Camp only) :

Learn to play ensemble music in a small chamber setting. Students will be divided into appropriate ensembles and coached on the intricacies of chamber music performance. Woodwinds and strings only.

Composition (Senior Camp only):

Learn the basics of music composition. Students must be able to read music to participate in this class.

Conducting:

Learn conducting patterns and how to direct a musical ensemble. Students will watch videos about conducting and you will take turns conducting in your class.

Dance Class:

Students will learn a dance routine that integrates jazz and contemporary styles. While learning this routine, they will develop an appreciation for dance as a fine art and learn proper technique. No experience or special equipment required.

Music Theater 2008Fiddle Class:

For string players only. Learn the basics of fiddling and folk music. All orchestral string instruments may participate.

Flute Choir:

Students will learn about and play music written for flute ensemble, from 3-6 parts. Intonation, embouchre, proper breathing, and high note fingerings will be taught. High school students will have the opportunity to play the bass and alto flutes.

Fundamentals of Music Theory :

This course introduces students to the rudiments of music theory: rhythm, scales, key signatures, intervals, melody, chords and tonality, for the purpose of developing an understanding of the fundamental building blocks of tonal music.

Guitar Class:

Learn guitar techniques in a group class. You must provide your own guitar.
Beginning guitar: 0-1 years of experience
Intermediate guitar: 2 or more years of experience

Handbells:

Learn the basics of ringing handbells and play in a bell ensemble. Please indicate previous experience. Students must be able to read music well for this class.

Introduction to Music Technology:

With the vast computer resources available today, musicans are able to quickly and effectively notate and even create musical sounds without ever touching a pencil or instrument. Combining elements of theory, arranging, and composition, students will learn to tap computing power for both practical needs and personal expression.

KMC Jazz 2008Jazz Improvisation (Senior Camp only) :

A class for instrumentalists who wish to learn the basics of jazz improvisation.

Piano Class:

This class will be held in the digital piano lab. Bring your own pieces to practice and play for the class, or play with all ten pianos at once! Three years experience is required.
Advanced Piano: 6 years or more experience required.

Solo Performance Class (Junior Camp only):

Learn about preparing a solo and ensemble piece; performance etiquette, and practice performing for your class.

Voice Class:

Students will work in a studio setting with a vocal professional to develop and improve individual vocal technique and tone production. A variety of repertoire will be utilized.

The World of Music :

In this course, students will learn about music as it has existed at various times throughout human culture, including non-Wesetern music. No reading of music notation involved. Simply come and enjoy!

Vocal Jazz (Senior Camp only):

This course will allow singers to explore some of the basic elements of vocal jazz. We will explore the nature of rhythms that "swing" vs. rhythms that are "straight," experiment with vocal improvisation and study vocal inflections that are used by jazz vocalists.
*Musical Theatre participants are not able to take this course.

Ensembles

Students must have at least one year of experience and bring their own instrument. Knollcrest Music Camp does not supply instruments.

KMC Band 2008Band:

A concert band ensemble. For flute and piccolo, oboe, clarinet, alto and bass clarinet, bassoon, French horn, saxophone, trumpet and cornet, trombone, baritone, euphonium, tuba and percussion.

Choir:

Practice and perform choral works as an ensemble.

Jazz Band:

A jazz band for all saxophones, trumpet and cornet, trombone, bass clef baritone or euphonium, drumset (experience needed), electric guitar, electric or string bass, and piano.

Music Theatre:

Involves dancing, acting, and singing in a production of a well-known musical. You are required to provide your own costume. Music theatre is limited to the first 60 applicants. Additional applicants will be placed in choir. No student instrumentalists are used.
*Participants are not able to also take Vocal Jazz

String Orchestra:

For violin, viola, cello and bass players.
