Biographical Information

Hyesook Kim joined the faculty at Calvin College in 1991. A native of Korea, she received a B.M. and M.M. from Seoul National University. After moving to the United States, she was awarded a M.M. and D.M.A. from Peabody Conservatory of Music while studying with Ann Schein. She has also taken piano master classes with Leon Fleisher. Dr. Kim is the recipient of numerous awards including the Annie Wentz Prize and the Zaidee Thomas Award, both from the Peabody Conservatory of Music.

She presents solo recitals regularly and has performed as concerto soloist and as a chamber musician in various cities such as Seoul, Pusan, Baltimore, College Park, Lansing, and Ann Arbor, as well as many other cities throughout Michigan.

She is the pianist and a founding member of Ensemble Montage, a chamber music group made up of Grand Rapids Symphony members that has actively introduced some of the great modern music literature to West Michigan audiences since 1997. Ensemble Montage has established a vital and ongoing series of contemporary music “retrospectives” at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts in Grand Rapids. These annual concerts feature the chamber music of Olivier Messiaen, the Second Viennese School, as well as other composers of the last fifty years.

The Calvin Center for Christian Scholarship recently awarded Dr. Kim a grant to pursue a research and performance project on the French composer Olivier Messiaen. During the 2004-2005 season, she will be performing Messiaen’s Visions de l’Amen at a number of venues across the United States and Canada.
