As established artists and top scholars in their fields, members of Calvin’s music faculty bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to every class, rehearsal, and private lesson.

Keith Brautigam

 

Keith Brautigam is professor of voice. He holds the MM and DM degrees in vocal performance from Indiana University, and was chair of the voice department at Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory before coming to Calvin. Dr. Brautigam has performed with numerous music organizations in the US and abroad including the Cleveland Orchestra, Grand Rapids Symphony, Calvin Oratorio Society, the Chicago Opera Theater, Chautauqua Opera, and the Instituto of the Teatro Colon, Buenos Aires.

tiffany engle

 

Tiffany Engle joined the Calvin music faculty in 2005 as an assistant professor and Director of Bands. She recently completed her DMA in wind conducting at Michigan State University and she holds a MM in conducting and saxophone performance from Ithaca College. Dr. Engle teaches brass methods, conducting, and instrumental literature and conducts the Calvin College Wind Ensemble, the Calvin College Symphonic Band and Calvin College Pep Band.

David Fuentes

 

David Fuentes is professor of composition, music theory, music history, and contemporary music. He holds a MM from the University of Iowa, and a PhD from Brandeis. Also an active composer, Dr. Fuentes completed a commission for the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship which was premiered by the Calvin Almuni Choir in 2002.

Phil Hash

 

Phillip Hash is assistant professor of music education at Calvin College. He holds an EdD in music education from the University of Illinois, a MM in wind conducting from Northwestern University, and a BM in music education from Millikin University. Dr. Hash taught instrumental music in Illinois for 14 years. He has also served as an adjudicator and clinician, and has published several journal articles and arrangements of instrumental music.

Hyesook Kim

 

Hyesook Kim is a professor of piano and music appreciation. She earned her BM and MM from Seoul National University and holds a DMA from Peabody Conservatory. Dr. Kim maintains a busy performance schedule as a soloist and as a founding member of the chamber music group Ensemble Montage.

Joel Navarro

 

Joel Navarro is associate professor of music at Calvin where he conducts the Capella and the Campus Choir and teaches conducting. He is also the Music Director of the Calvin Oratorio Society. Dr. Navarro is an accomplished vocalist with numerous music theater and opera credits in his native Philippines. He holds a DMA in conducting from Michigan State University.

Robert Nordling

 

Robert Nordling serves in the Calvin Music Department where he conducts the Calvin College Orchestra and Calvin Alumni Orchestra and teaches in the areas of music history, conducting and music and worship. He also serves as Resource Development Specialist for the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship.

Bert Polman

 

Bert Polman is professor and chair of the Music Department. A well-known hymnologist, Dr. Polman teaches courses in music in worship and world music and serves as a Senior Research Fellow at the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship. His PhD is from the University of Minnesota.

David Reimer

 

David Reimer is associate professor of Music at Calvin, teaching violin, chamber music, string methods and music appreciation. He holds his DMA from the Ohio State University as well as MM and BM degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music where he studied with Bernard Goldschmidt. Dr. Reimer has a strong orchestra background and he performs regularly with the Grand Rapids Symphony.

Charsie Sawyer

 

Charsie Randolph Sawyer is a professor of voice at Calvin. Dr. Sawyer holds Vocal Performance degrees from Dana School of Music, Youngstown State University, BMA, and the University of Michigan, MM, DMA. Dr. Sawyer is an active soloist and conducts the Calvin College Gospel Choir. She has sung with companies such as the Charlotte Opera Company and its touring arm, the North Carolina Opera Company, Michigan Opera Company, Opera Grand Rapids, Calvin Oratorio Society, San Francisco Opera Merola Program, United States Air-Force Heartland of America Band, and has performed recitals internationally and with a host of regional organizations.

Pearl Shangkuan

 

Pearl Shangkuanis professor of music at Calvin where she directs the Calvin Alumni Choir and the Calvin Women's Chorale, and teaches choral conducting and choral literature. Dr. Shangkuan holds BM and MM degrees from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ, and a DMA in Choral Conducting from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.

Tim Steele

 

Tim Steele is associate professor of music at Calvin where he teaches music history and theory. He received his master's degree in Music History and Literature at Temple University and his PhD in Musicology at the University of Chicago.

John Witvliet

 

John Witvliet is professor of music and director of the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship. A Calvin alumnus, Dr. Witvliet holds master's degree in music and theology, and a PhD in Theology and Liturgical Studies from Notre Dame.

Benita Wolters-Fredlund

 

Benita Wolters-Fredlund joined the Calvin music faculty in 2006 as an Assistant Professor. She completed her PhD in musicology at the University of Toronto in 2005 and she also holds a MA in musicology from the University of British Columbia. Dr. Wolters-Fredlund teaches music history, music theory, and music appreciation.
