2008 Weekend Tour - Calvin College Wind Ensemble
On the weekend of November 21-23, Dr. Tiffany Engle and the Calvin College Wind Ensemble traveled around Lake Michigan, performing in suburban Chicago and Milwaukee for their Fall 2008 Tour. On Friday, the Band went to Illiana Christian High School to work with the ICHS Wind Ensemble and perform a joint concert sponsored by the Chicagoland chapter of the Calvin Alumni Association. The two ensembles combined to perform Gustav Holst's Second Suite to close the evening.
On Saturday, members of the Wind Ensemble enjoyed some free time in downtown Chicago before traveling north for a concert in Brookfield, Wisconsin, hometown to three Band members. This excellent evening was sponsored by the SE Wisconsin chapter of the Calvin Alumni Association. Small ensembles from the Wind Ensemble led worship at Brookfield Christian Reformed Church and Immanuel Presbyterian Church on Sunday, Nov. 23 before the Band returned to Grand Rapids.
2008 Summer International Tour - Capella
Capella Receives Two Third Prize Awards in International Vocal Competition
From May 22-June 4, 2008 Capella toured the Netherlands and France. In addition to concerts and church services in these countries, the Capella participated in the Florilége Vocal international choir competitions in Tours, France from May 30 to June 1 where they won third-place prizes in both categories that they competed in. All participating choirs were rigorously pre-screened before the competition. Capella was chosen from entries submitted from all over the world.
This is the first time any choir from Calvin College participated in an international competition so it was a great
learning experience for Capella. It was an occasion for our students to use their competitive drive and
energy to meet higher artistic demands, be exposed to standards of excellence from choirs around the world,
engage in cultural exchange, act more deeply in community, and discern how their interaction with varied
musics and peoples of the world are able to inform and broaden their faith perspectives.

From May 19 through June 2, 2008, the Calvin College Wind Ensemble toured Central Europe. The repertoire for the concert tour was music that celebrates rich musical traditions - a lot of distinctly American music such as Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man, Walter Piston's Tunbridge Fair, Morton Gould's Ballad for Band, Robert Russell Bennett, Suite of Old American Dances, and some marches by John Philip Sousa. In addition to this, the band celebrated the folk traditions of the countries in which they'll be visiting, programming Hungarian composer Frigyes Hidas' Capriccio, Bela Bartok's Romanian Dances, and Halsey Stevens' Ukrainian Folk Songs.
