Concerto Competion

Date of competition:  Thursday, October 29, 2009
Application Due Date: Monday, October 19 (12 noon) No late applications will be accepted.
Date of concert: 

  • Friday, December 11, 2009 at Grand Rapids Christian High School

Music and Time Parameters:
Please use the approximate time frame of 10 minutes for your performance duration. If this basic time frame of 10 minutes is exceeded significantly, please check with the orchestra conductor (Mr. Nordling).  In the case of a suite or Baroque concerto, more than one movement may be played if the total performance time falls into the basic time frame.  Singers may choose to sing a pair of arias, or recitative and aria keeping the same time frame in mind.

Eligibility:

  1. Soloists may appear only once in a Concerto Concert, though students may appear again in a Concerto Concert on a different instrument.
  2. Soloists must be studying privately at Calvin for credit both in the semester they audition and the semester they perform.
  3. Soloists need not be music majors.
  4. Soloists may audition only with the recommendation of their private teachers.
  5. Soloists must perform the entire movement they wish to compete with in Recital Hour during the semester of the competition. (Fall 2009)
  6. Soloists must be a sophomore, junior, or senior.

Competition: 

  1. Competition for performance in the Concerto Concert will be on the evening of October 29, 2009 in the in the Chapel.
  2. The applicants must compete with the entire work they wish to perform in the concert.
  3. The students may use their audition piece at their jury, unless it has been performed at a previous jury.

Adjudication:

  1. Judges from outside the Calvin music faculty will serve as adjudicators.
  2. Judges will use a point system measuring aspects of technique, musicianship and performance rapport.
  3. The number of winners is variable.

Notes:

  • This competition does not replace your regular jury. You may repeat the piece at your jury if you have not performed it on a previous jury.
