Knollcrest Band

History of the Knollcrest Band

The Knollcrest Band was started in 1980 by Professor Derald De Young. Calvin is the only private college in Michigan to have a completely separate and independent second concert band. The Knollcrest Band assures that every students who comes to Calvin will have the opportunity to play in a concert band. The Knollcrest Band is made up mostly of first year students but not entirely. The band numbers about 50 students and rehearses three times a week from 12:30 to 1:20 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The Knollcrest Band appears in the Fall Music Festival in October, performs in area churches as part of the worship service and gives a concert at the end of each semester. Students in the Knollcrest Band are encouraged but not required to take private lessons to improve their musical skills. All students in the Knollcrest Band are given an opportunity to audition for the Calvin Band, if they wish, in the spring semester for the following year. Tiffany Engle was appointed as the band's second conductor in the fall of 2005.
