The Music Department recognizes that each student is unique. God has granted different talents and abilities to each one, and the music faculty seek to help each student be a good steward of those talents. We are confident of the quality and comprehensive scope of study offered within the department, and of the propriety of the policies listed above. We acknowledge, however, that we cannot anticipate every potential situation.
For this reason, the departmental Student Life committee will consider student requests for special accommodation. Before submitting requests to the committee, however, students are required to have discussed their situations with the full-time faculty member(s) most closely related to their course of study. If the situation warrants, a formal application should then be made using the following procedure:
1. The student will state the request and the reasons for it in a letter to the Student Life committee; the application may include an additional letter in support of the request from a department faculty member.
2. After reviewing the request, the committee will schedule an interview with the student to discuss the circumstances prompting the request.
3. The committee will consult other concerned parties, as necessary.
4. If the committee finds that the request has sufficient merit, the committee will bring the request to the full-time music faculty for departmental approval. If the committee decides to deny the request, it must inform the student in writing why the request was denied.
5. Having been granted for departmental approval, the case may be referred back to the committee (or another departmental committee) to be implemented.
Notice of any decision regarding student requests will be sent to the student (and kept in the student's file), the student's academic advisor, the chair, and the academic dean. In no case should departmental approval in one situation be interpreted as a strict precedent for future action in another, regardless of the apparent similarity of the circumstances.
