Leo Cayvan Chamber Music Room and Library

The Calvin Music Department possesses a truly outstanding library of sheet music for small string ensembles donated by Mr. Leo Cayvan in 1965 and augmented each year by regular purchases. The collection is available to any Calvin chamber ensemble. For information on borrowing music from this library, contact the Music Department Office.

Music Theory Computer Lab / Composer's Station

Music Lab

The Music Theory/Keyboard Lab couples computer and electronic music resources and provides a comprehensive facility for the study of music especially music theory, aural skills, and composition.

Features of the Music Department Lab:
Music Lab
  • Each station has an 88-key keyboard with “weighted” keys. In addition, the choice of soundcard allows us to use internal synthesis, resulting in less station complexity and fewer cords.
  • Flat screen monitors and custom-built music stands make the desktops pleasing to use for both writing and playing music.
  • A“Smart Board” that functions like a dry-erase board with a touch sensitive screen.
  • Several music software programs are available at each station, including Igor (notation) and Cubasis (sequencing).

In addition to the Music Lab, which may be used by any student enrolled in a music course at Calvin, we have a "Composer's Station," a private studio equipped with professional-level sequencing software and advanced sythesis and sampling capabilities. Tutorials on using the equipment are given periodically throughout the school year. Typical projects that require use of the Composer's Station include original composition, orchestration work, advanced counterpoint projects, film scoring, and digital processing/mixing. Other students who wish to use the equipment must obtain permission from Professor Fuentes or Professor Wolters-Fredlund. Students may check out a Composer's Station key from the Music Office during working hours or from the Music Lab on weekday evenings and Saturdays.

Lockers / Instrument Storage

Instrument Lockers

The Instrumental Storage Area contains 300+ lockers, storage closets, and cages for the exclusive use of music students. You may rent lockers at the Music Department Office. Rental rates for one year are:

  • $7 for instrumental lockers
  • $5 for keyboard lockers (for music storage only)
  • $10 for keys for cello closet/instrumental cages ($5 is refundable with return of key at the end of the year)

Cayvan Recorded Media Center

The Cayvan Recorded Media Center contains the department’s recording collection, video collection, and listening facilities. It is located in the main library, on the second floor just west of the main entrance. It is named after Mr. Leo Cayvan, a benefactor of the Calvin Music Department in the 1950’s and 1960’s, whose donated record collection comprises the basis of the department’s holdings. Please see the Cayvan website for hours and procedures.
