Recital Hour with the Philippine Madrigal Singers
1:30 p.m. - Covenant Fine Arts Center Recital Hall

The Calvin College Music Department is pleased to feature the world-renowned Philippine Madrigal Singers in an informal music colloquium on Thursday, September 15, 1:30 p.m. in the Covenant Fine Arts Center Recital Hall. Currently on world tour, the Madz, as they are fondly called, recently performed in Puerto Madryn, Argentina for the World Symposium on Choral Music and Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires. They are widely acknowledged around the world because of their conductorless approach to performance. Their impeccable musicianship, virtuosity, seamless phrasing, record of victories in choral competition, range of repertoire, audience reach, and musical ambassadorship have earned for them the UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2009. Their full concert, sponsored by the West Michigan Asian American Association, will be at the Grand Rapids Public Museum Theater on September 16 at 7:30 p.m.

Admission is free; tickets are not required.

Faculty & Guest Series: Leslie Van Becker, viola & Michael Hovnanian, bass

Concert ProgramThe 2011-12 Season kicks off with two of Calvin's string faculty performing in the Covenant Fine Arts Leslie Van BeckerCenter Recital Hall. Leslie Van Becker has been principal viola of the Grand Rapids Symphony since 1978. She earned a bachelor of music degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and master's in music from the Yale University School of Music. She attended the Conservatory with a four-year full tuition Rockefeller Grant and held a School of Music Assistantship at Yale.

Michael Hovnanian teaches Double Bass at Calvin College.  He holds Masters of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in double bass performance from Michigan State University, where heMichael Hovnanian studied under Jack Budrow, and received Bachelor degrees in both Music and Music Education from Central Michigan University.  In addition to being a member of the Grand Rapids Symphony, Michael Hovnanian has performed with numerous orchestras throughout Michigan, including the Detroit Symphony, and is also the associate principal bassist of the West Michigan (formerly West Shore) Symphony and a member of the Lansing Symphony.

Tickets are required for this concert and are available at the Calvin College Box Office. Tickets are $10 for adults and free for students and children.

Faculty Showcase Recital
1:30 p.m. - Covenant Fine Arts Center Recital Hall

Concert ProgramJoin the Calvin College Music Faculty for the ninth annual Faculty Showcase Recital on Thursday, September 22 at 1:30 p.m. This recital is open to the public. The concert will highlight the talents of the department's full-time and part-time faculty through a wide array of solos and ensembles.

Admission is free; tickets are not required.

Concert ProgramThe ensemble derives its name from Preservation Hall, the venerable music venue located in the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter, founded in 1961 by Allan and Sandra Jaffe. The band has traveled worldwide, spreading their mission to nurture and perpetuate the art form of New Orleans Jazz. Whether performing at Carnegie Hall or Lincoln Center, for British royalty or the king of Thailand, this music embodies a joyful, timeless spirit.

Student Rush Pass
Students of any age with a valid student ID can purchase a $5 Student Rush Pass one hour prior to the performance at the Calvin College Box Office located in the west lobby of the Covenant Fine Arts Center. This offer is subject to availability. Student ID must be presented. Limit one ticket per student.
